I actually saw a thing a while back comparing AI to Thneeds. It's a perfect comparison. An all-purpose item that doesn't serve any practical, or even remotely useful purpose, which ultimately leads to insurmountable environmental destruction, over what is essentially a fad.
Thereβs always some dumb-dumb trying to upload Ai here. Iβve made hundreds of reports by now. Thankfully the mods are usually quick to remove it.
Iβm super happy with FAβs zero tolerance response to GenAI, itβs like the one place online I donβt have to see it on the regular.

Yeah... AI can be a pain on the ass or useful, depending on the POV, the bad (or good) thing (depending of POV), is that it is done to stay, the enterprises want to put it on everything (PC's, Refrigerators, Smartphones... Everything they can). So, we have to live with it, at least, restrictions of AI make impossible to them to replace real artists (we can't call "art" the stuff made by AI, just generated content). And it really fails with the touch that only a human can do, the effort and the time, the attention to details, simply can't be replaced, no matter how long or "perfect" is the training, it will never have the same talent that a real artist has.
In my personal use, I use AI just as a tool, no more, no less (mainly for correcting spelling/grammar mistakes on my works), it can be useful on some scenarios (mainly LLMs), they can help when you run out of ideas.

I still can't justify the downsides personally. The massive hit to the planet/climate change of simply using LLMs, the cost of living and loss of land to eminent domain effecting communities where these AI data centers are being built, and the reality of unchecked AI for profit and it's effect on the human mind: skill loss, psychosis, encouraging people to un-alive themselves, etc, etc. I could go on, but I don't need to for myself. These reasons alone are enough for me morally and personally to abstain.

It is true, although in general human activity causes the degradation of the planet, AI is only one more factor, unfortunately, our species depends on destroying the planet to live comfortably (cars, data Centers, servers, buildings, animal husbandry...) π₯²
In my specific case, I do a lot of technological things and it helps me to quickly investigate or find bugs in codes, but it's true, people become dependent and creativity decreases, because they stop of thinking by themselves, AI should be a tool, not the way we think.
It is a double-edged sword, on the one hand it can increase productivity, but, on the other, it can make us useless, it depends a lot on the use given to it.
The average AI user usually uses it only for trivial things... And that's a really waste of rss, doing stuff that you can just ask to Alexa, and yeah, trying to earn money with stuff created with AI it is not ethical and should be illegal, unfortunately, there are no laws that regulate that.
Energy costs depends more on where you live than AI, where I live, electrical bills didn't increase, have been the same.

It reminds me of Jevons Paradox. An innovation (Ai) is created and made highly accessible in the promise it will diminish the cost/use of resources in certain areas (health, creativity, productivity, combating climate crisis, etc). And while it does tackle said problems (percentage of accuracy may vary area to area), its ease of access creates an exponential rise in demand/use of resources across all areas. The innovation exasperates problems at higher rates than it solves them, along with creating new problems in it wake while demand just keeps rising.
The way we could combat this is first with awareness, and second with conscientious practices as individuals and regulation of this technology on a broader scale to create a net gain from these new technologies. But historically that's a gamble whether or not humans will actually get on board to solve this issue. The best I can do is spread awareness and make a personal choice not to add to the problem.

Yep... Itβs a double-edged sword... The best we can do is use it responsibly, and not for trivial things, like checking the weather or such. Only a small part of people can harness all of its capabilities. LLMs are getting heavier, and GPUs are consuming more power. Just a few years ago, most GPUs for domestic use consumed less than 300W (like a stock RTX Titan or RTX 2080, both around 280Wβhigh-end GPUs). But now, well... my RTX 5070ti (a high-end model, but not at the top) consumes around 300W at stock, and the 5090, at stock, consumes around 575W (I believe it can go up to 1kW with overclocking). The same happens with GPUs used to run AI: they can consume even more. For example, the H100 can consume around 700W. This is part of the reason why Google is developing TPUs (chips specifically designed for AI tasks), and NPUs are being developed too, although the ones typically found in consumer PCs are still more like toys.
Anyways, returning to the point, yeah, we need to use this tool responsibly because right now the usage is growing exponentially, and we donβt yet have the hardware to run it without consuming massive amounts of power.
