I had thought that Dragons in Soaring would not typically use Swords. The Dragons in Soaring are all Quadrupedal, and holding a sword in your mouth seemed unbalanced to me so as much as I personally think Swords are the coolest weapon aesthetically, I figured they may use other sorts of weapons: Clawed Gauntlets, Horned Helmets, Tail weapons, knifes attached to their wings, and maybe throwing spears, but only if they are in flight.
Then I saw a video of a Dog who had watched her owners sword fight, and wanted to be part of the fun so she learned to fight with them too, holding a sword in her mouth and just going ham on her owners with rapid attacks. From there I was convinced it could theoretically work, may not be standard for Dragons cause it still takes up their mouths which could also be used for breathing their elemental power or for talking, but it could be really good for stealth, attacking an enemy who does not already know you are there. You don't typically need to talk while sneaking and breath attacks tend to be too flashy.
The Puppo's name was also Pinto Bean, so I decided to try drawing the Dragon Pinto with a sword of her own, and I am considering keeping this cannon just because it's cool, although at first thought it is kinda an odd choice to give a sword to Pinto of all the Prodragonists.
Pinto usually does not like having to fight other dragons unless as a last resort, she's more of a diplomat and a spell caster who would prefer to use her Valkirtani magic to find clever ways to trap or distract and escape enemies rather than blast them to smithereens. The last thing she wants to do is have to kill another dragon simply because that's not the kind of Dragon she wants to be. Pinto is a kind and intelligent dragoness, though maybe that is exactly why she IS the one who should have a sword. A lot of weapons have other utilities than fighting: An axe can be used to cut wood, a spear can be used for Hunting and Fishing, a Hammer can be used for breaking hard rocks or building...
A sword is a versatile weapon but it's main function is being a weapon.
I imagine Pinto's adoptive father probably gave her this sword because he knew she may eventually need it whether she wants to use it or not. She is a Hybrid Dragoness in a world that is not friendly to Hybrids. Trickery, and clever thinking can only take her so far, and it can not always keep her friends safe. He trusts her with this weapon because he knows she will use it at the right time, for the right reasons.
Also it's easy to forget with how friendly and smart Pinto is, she is also a crazy survivalist wild-girl who grew up in the middle of a forest and trained by a father-figure who is basically a renegade Commando/Super Spy.
I decided to make her sword based on a Macahuitl: An Aztec weapon which consisted of a wooden paddle lined along the edges with sharp Obsidian Razors that could be replaced as they get chipped. Part of my decision is simply because I think Macahuitls are awesome and underrated, but also because with the existence of Dragons that can control Metal, it wouldn't make sense for most dragons to use metal weapons. One encounter with a Metal Dragon and they can just turn your weapon or armor against you. So I want to lean more into Dragons having to be a little creative with weapons, using stuff like Obsidian, Bone, Wood...etc. Also with the existence of Magic in Nature there could be weapons made from materials that have unique properties to be more effective or have unique utilities that you would not usually expect from that kind of weapon.
Maybe Pinto's sword could stretch and bend to be used like a bladed Whip with poisoned edges?
