A convention that I've vended at a number of times hosted a T-shirt contest. I don't normally do spec work, but I wanted to try something a little different and this gave me a good push to do it.
The theme this year is "Year of the Horse" and the convention moved to my home state of Kentucky for this year. With that in mind, I wanted to combine Chinese ink paintings with Kentucky visuals.
I studied the work of Xu Beihong in particular, but browsed many a traditional artist past and present. You don't see a lot of examples of horses rearing, so that's another bit of Western influence in this piece.
Unfortunately, this was done digitally. Part of me wants to get a proper set of ink, calligraphy pens, and rice paper, but I do not need another art hobby lmao

Oh gosh, thank you so much!
Truthfully, I'm not sure how well it'll do in the contest but I really appreciate it! I probably could've done something more along my regular style and made a truly kick-ass design, but then I don't get to pretend to be a pretentious artist with all of that "symbolism" with the blending of influences. :P
In all seriousness, though, I am working to detangle what I want to make and what I think other people want to see and this was a good exercise. :)
The "prize" is just a shirt and a weekend badge (which I would already have if I'm vending lol) so I was doing it more for the love of the game anyway lol
(Sorry for the long comment. I think the coffee is finally kicking in lol)

I think it's a neat deviation from the other styles you post, shows your range as an artist! Heh, and it's fun to learn about the influences and symbolism and history; real-world lore is cool stuff! Regardless, I still hope it performs well, and that you have fun if you do end up at that convention!
