Appearance:
Amaura are medium-sized, sauropod Pokémon with blue, scaly skin and two cream-colored, sail-like membranes that rest upon their heads, each sporting a reddish-pink gradient.
On each side of their bodies, blue ice crystals protrude from the hide.
Biology:
Amaura are the smaller child-forms of the much larger evolved Pokémon, Aurorus.
They're typically shy and gentle plant-eating creatures that aren't usually as social with other Pokémon not of their own kind. They're normally quite tribal, preferring to socialize only with other Amaura. But like with any other Pokémon, when given enough training and proper supervision from trainers, they can learn to befriend others rather quickly. This behavior is entirely natural, as it's a leftover instinct from millions of years ago, when the Pokémon had to survive on its own immediately after birth.
Contrary to how they're usually depicted in media, wild Amaura aren't typically raised by their own birth parents. Once the mother has laid her eggs, she covers them with snow and other debris to keep them hidden away from predators, and then she leaves to continue moving on with the herd.
Amaura eggs usually all hatch at around the same time, and once they hatch, the brood will stick together as a family to fend for themselves. Researchers speculate that this behavior comes from Aurorus being large herd beasts constantly on the move.
With such tiny offspring, no one would want to accidentally step on anyone and cause a fight between herd members, and in such harsh environments, it's not ideal to keep slowing down to care for offspring who can't keep up with your own giant strides. So the only solution for the Aurorus at the time was just to have as many babies as your body could produce, tuck them away somewhere secluded, and then leave them on their own.
It's very rare, but occasionally some Amaura will eventually reunite with their birth parents, should they happen to recognize each other through scent.
Diet:
As bleak as life for them might seem to us, Amaura are very fast learners AND growers. Any that are able to survive into their first two years of life, can usually rest assured that they'll be in the clear for reaching adulthood, as they grow and level up by eating... And they eat A LOT.
They prefer to eat fresh grass and other leafy greens they can find hidden under the snow. They will also dine on most berries they come across, as well. Some can even develop a taste for specialized Pokémon chow.
Though, they can struggle with adjusting to many of these meal options, as most of the typical plants and berries they ate millions of years ago have also gone extinct. So expect to be greeted with a fussy eater should you decide to revive one for yourself.
Health:
For the most part, Amaura and Aurorus are normally very healthy Pokémon with strong bodies and intelligent minds, making them quick learners on how to keep themselves safe, and they're even smart enough to know how to heal their own wounds with certain ointments made from certain berry juices and foliage.
But the problem comes when the Pokémon is revived into the modern-day world. Some Amaura that were revived were brought back carrying diseases that had originally gone extinct with them.
One such disease known simply as the 'Creeping Ache'.
Terrible flesh-eating bacteria named for how it normally starts as a minor aching sensation in the Pokémon's body (Usually in either the head or feet), that persists for the first few days, growing ever stronger each day, until eventually the Pokémon's skin and flesh slowly start to deteriorate and turn necrotic. The process of necrotizing spreads further and further each day, creeping throughout the poor creature's body until death.
Bizarrely enough, this disease only seems to affect Fossil Pokémon only.
Terrifying as this disease is, modern-day technology has advanced enough to where it is easy to remove such ailments during the revival process, all with the help of said researcher's specialized computer equipment. Providing you with a freshly-revived prehistoric partner that is happy, healthy and disease-free!
Though this isn't to say that Amaura and Aurorus aren't still susceptible to the illnesses of the modern day, and can still contract the diseases of our time. So keep them physically fit and be sure to have them regularly scheduled to see Nurse Joy once a month or so for a check-up.
Temperament and Human Interaction:
Amaura are shy creatures, and many struggle with befriending humans and other Pokémon at first, but just like with any other, they can learn to socialize with enough training and support from their loved ones.
When they've finally grown comfortable enough to come out of their shells, they are gentle, sweet-natured Pokémon with big hearts.
They are very playful and loving with those they care about...sometimes, a bit too playful and loving, actually. Their cute looks make them popular with small children, but it's not typically a good idea to leave these Pokémon unsupervised around children as they love to snuggle with those they feel comfortable around, but their freezing cold bodies can be a hazard, especially if they become too excited in any way.
The ice crystals on their bodies are capable of releasing a gas that can freeze the air (And everything else) around it, reducing the temperature to near subzero degrees. In the earlier days of reviving these Pokémon, one inexperienced researcher was killed when she approached the Amaura too quickly and unintentionally spooked it.
In its fearful and defensive state, it immediately responded with freezing the woman solid, then shattering her frozen body with a swing of its tail.
This unfortunate event is often kept in mind when reviving them, leading to every single one to not only have their digital coding edited during the revival process (Doing this ensures they are calmer when restored), but they're also supervised, cared for, and socialized by Fossil revival facility staff for at least a month before registered and given to the trainer.
