"Gfff!"
The living room floor echoed with the struggles of paper, tape, and cardboard. Hunched over and flush with frustration, Timothy Ranger rolled his neck, feeling the suddenly clawing roll of his flannel shirt irritate his spines and shoulders. He was a goddamn tradesman, for Sun's sake. And yet every attempt to neatly fold a simple present proved agonizingly slow—the colorful wrapping shifted, or bent, or curled woefully out of place, or—
"...this was easier when I was tha' one bein' tied up."
Sticking more snipped slices of tap onto his shoulder and tail, Rangy recalled his first plan (made by desire rather than ingenuity), sighing at the teasing dream for the feline's wonder and merriment.
Bound and stored in a box. Sealed in a cute envelope. Stuffed in a fuzzy sock. Bowed up and placed upon Elain's fancy new tree in a place all her own. Dangling from a wreath outside her door. And what joy the feline would have!
The lizard frowned.
Suffocated. Squished. Starved. Enveloped in chrome chemicals. Blown away in the wind. Or Elain just failing to notice before...
He shivered at the twelve days of things that could go wrong with such short-sighted mischief. Putting the ideas to rest, he tugged on another stretch of tape, bumping the plain box with his pointed leather shoe.
"Mmmaybe next year".
