This was a late entry for Penguin's book cover competition. It's James and a "giant" peach! Actually I was surprised at how small the peaches at my local supermarket were. Not impressed! But I am overjoyed at how well this image came out.
It's a good pic to show to my family so they understand when I say I 'make dolls'.

I make my dolls entirely from scratch, staring with a wire armature held together with epoxy putty. I then sculpt the fimo details on and bake the whole thing. Once it's out of the oven I wrap it in quilt batting. In James' case I then measured and cut clothes for him, hand-sewed them and dressed him. The fur ruff was hot-glued on and his hair is squirrel fur glued on with cyanoacrylate glue (these were the days before I found a supplier of fabri-tac in the UK!)

I do character designs and custom creatures - ie if you don't have a design I can take three of your favourite animals and make you a doll from them. Please send any commission enquiries by note!

I wouldn't say darker. I'd say... the way the memory of being a kid makes you a little blue for a moment, because now you're an adult... but then you remember that its a good memory and it makes the rest of your day so much better. He's still in the "blue because now i'm an adult" phase but i'm sure it'll make the rest of his day much better.
Very true, although as far as childhoods go James' wasn't exactly the best. I was reading it over to re-familiarize myself with it and god, his aunts were just horrific to him! But then it's all about moving up and onwards isn't it, he's probably wishing that peach was bigger so he could go on another adventure.
Conversely it could be metaphorical of how grown up he had to be in the story. But then I'd just be painting targets around my arrows. ^_^
