You're right; it's not the standard 2A04 chip, which as you know, has 2 square, 1 triangle, noise, and DPCM.
I used the Konami VRC6 setting, which added two more square, and a sawtooth channel. Konami only used the VRC6 in 2 Japanese games, but due to the structural difference in the American NES, those "expansion" pins were moved to under the system, completely inaccessible... So even if you managed to get this game to go into an NES, you would be missing those three extra channels.
