I was always told to do the construction method or do blocking, depending if I was working from life or IMAGINATION.

XD Ive tried everything, I pretty bad at it or it takes me forever to do hands.

Have you tired Hogarth's Drawing Dynamic Hands, Loomis' Drawing The Dead and Hands or Bridgman's Book of A Hundred Hands?

It's, um, the one with heads. Not Zombies.

All three of the artists make pretty spectacular books. I'd highly recommend checking them out if you have the time.

don't avoid drawing them
you draw them MORE because it gives you practice
I often spend 20 -30 minutes on hands alone and I practice in my off time

Yeah, I'm learning more and more to try to tackle them lately. Just still really frustrating at the very end of a drawing.

i used to break the arms off my old barbies and lay them out some of them have their hands in different shapes...or you could buy some of those wooden drawing models i think they sell hand and arm ones

i generally use my own hands as reference since it's easiest to see the curves
also he's holding a parasol which I just happen to have one- so I used that as ref in the actual hand itself xD

it's kind of the same way with expressions. I use the feeling of expressions as ref instead of heavy reliance on visual imagery. It's easier for me to understand something if I can feel how muscles pull and where the strain is.

Hands sometimes... mostly, FUCK FEET. ;_;
