The annoying part is everyone else I know has delightfully cute and friendly ones and I got the bad apple

Where'd you get it from, and at what age? The previous conditions and how much they're handled/socialized when they're young and "impressionable" has a lot to do with how friendly they are. It's also a little bit genetics too - we have one boy with a grumpy streak who was handled plenty (he was our only hedgehog at one point and completely spoiled) but it's just his personality.
