This is basically to show that im still alive. Its a sketch that i rather liked that was floating around in my pile, so i decided id go ahead and finish it. However, for fear of fucking it up, and due to lazyness, i decided not to ink the picture, and instead just scanned it as a sketch. At any rate, this is one of many sketches that ive been slowly popping out but have never gotten around to finishing. Ive been pushing myself to just flat out draw more, rather than always trying to finish every little image i doodle.
Also, my apologies to those i owe comissions for. They are hidden away in my pile of sketches as well and ive been extremely lazy about doing anything about them. Due to this, im not gonna charge yall for these pictures, and i promise to have them done before christmas. Any money involved will be purely donation, but i wont expect it since ive taken my sweet time.
As for details about the image. Well, this is a random sketch i did as practice. I wanted to practice more on my wings, and just keep myself in the swing of drawing. To be honest, it doesnt actually reference to much. Such as, even though i like the Wii, its not my perticularly favorite system at this time. I just wanted my char to be holding something, and i read a lot of gaming comics.
Anyways, about the picture, other than it just being a sketch and not inked, i had a fun time coloring it. I learned how to use a couple of interesting tools that makes coloring in a a-properly defined shape (Broken line, you find a better term to describe it.) Basically, i couldnt use the fill tool, but the magnetic selection tool is a big help.
As for coloring, i experimented a bit. This time around i did a very basic shading job. I put down the base colors, and then i did a cellshading type of coloring. Basically, i used a solid circle with 100% opaque in different layers to create the different shades. (Instead of a semi-transparent brush with like 30% opaque like i usually do. It takes several brush strokes to create the color, and more brush strokes in area with more of that color.... its like painting i guess.)
Anyways, in this method, i colored in all the different shades, ignoring that the lines between the shades were jagged. I then merged just the color layers and i went and played with the smudge tool. Witht he smudge tool, i blended the colors together, and it even helped with the wings to smudge the shadows and highlights into more beleivable positions. The most usefull thing about this was that it made coloring a good deal simpler and easier to define. And even more, it gave me more control over the shadows and highlights by smudging them around into the right places. It made coloring a lot of fun IMO.
As for the background.... well i suck at backgrounds, but im extremely happy with this one. Basically, rather than do a full background, i just took a snip of one. Not only would this save me countless markers, but it allows me to draw a background, that its uglyness does not hinder the actual picture. Its like a picture in a picture. And since its small, it doesnt gain to much of the viewers attention. I will most likely do backgrounds like this more often. But eventually i will have to learn how to do a real background.
Other than that, i just decided to give the wii wings and have it flying as well, seeing as it made no sense for me to be up so high when playing a game system.
"Red Bull, it gives you wings."
*Note: Ive never actually drank a red bull, but i thought it was cute.*

The reference is lost on me.
It depends upon how you use it, i still need to change the settings on it a bit though. But if your careful and run along where the colors meet, it will just blur rather than swirl. Otherwise, its just a matter of pulling one color into another.
However, i didnt really like how it just pulled the color across another rather than just blend the two together. Im gonna have to continue experimenting with it to make it work properly. One of the biggest things i need to figure out how to do, is how to blend the smudge the colors without having to merge the layers. (Sadly, the only options i have is either all the layers, or just the one. Since i dont want the outline being smudged as well, i just merged the layers with the different shades of color.)
I still got to practice some more, and i stilll dont think its the style that im looking for. Im still looking for a more of a painting, or marker type of the look. Something that looks traditional.

I think i just need to fork over the money for artrage, that program is awesome.
As for ways of coloring, eh there are so many. Ive tried a lot. Experimenting really is a lot of fun.
One thing you might want to try... if you have a tablet. Is a sort of watercolor/airbrush type of look. Where you just use a light brush brush. (What do you call the burshes, that arent solid, but are dark int he middle and more transparent as it reaches the edges?) Anyways, just color in the shadow areas and leave the highlights as just white. Generally, the color will be a lot lighter and not as dominant, but its a lot of fun and fairly quick. Might be hard to do with a mouse though.
Other than that, its just a matter of colors, opacity, flow, and layers. I think smudging is sort of an after thing, for touch ups, or to make certain colors more jagged for fur and feathers.

Here is an old one i colored back in the day. Colored one of Salamanders pics. Wonder where hes disappeared to.

Its not really 'professional,' but its a lot of fun and extremely quick. I havent done one like that in a long time though.

Haha, to be honest, for this picture i started with the wings. I wanted to be up in the air. Kinda copying a common pose from my fav manga, anima. But i wanted to be doing something, or holding something, and a weapon seemed to... cliche. So i gave him a wiimote. Then i just drew in the wii for fun, and the redbull because it made me giggle.
The background comes from a long time hate of drawing backgrounds, and ive noticed that many artist do those bordered clips of backgrounds like that. I felt it was a nice way of giving the image of the background, without making a big deal out of the background. It also just made it a lot easier.
But it all started because i was practicing drawing the wing. more specifically, the wing on the right side of the image.

The Red Bull grew it's own wings? X3 lol
I wonder how the Wii drinks it without messing itself up...? :P
And you're not the only one. I noticed a few of ppl I Watch haven't been around lately, however I seem to know they're lurking about. :P
