I have to admit that when we watched Flash Gordon in Vee's server, when princess Aura said that her tears were proof that she had changed it reminded me so much of Tul. Was there any inspiration (specific or general) for that Tul moment? It's always so powerful and sweet whenever I read it. A perfect toku moment to me. As always, I love your art.
Thank you!
I think that Tul moment was mostly inspired by the Ishinomori Kamen Rider comics! In it, there are a few scenes where Takeshi Hongo waxes poetic on the tragedy of his cyborg modification and the lonely nature of his fight. A lot of the tone for that scene came from the small moments like these.
Tul’s costume and origin story as Dyvaman heavily lean on Kamen Rider to begin with (being made for an evil organization as a weapon, rebelling against that organization, and having themes of questioning their own humanity due to their bodies.) They likewise share the “teardrop” motif on their helmets, which is meant to represent their respective sorrow. Fun detail: Tul’s teardrops form a water molecule’s structure along with the larger circle for their eyes.
However, unlike Takeshi Hongo, who had his humanity taken from him by Shocker, Tul had no context for being human. I think their situation, rather than sorrow at losing their humanity, is more like longing for something they can’t put into words, and pain at having that denied by the people around them. Their pain also related to lacking someone who could relate to their circumstances, which changed to an extent after they found their respective counterparts: Hongo met Ichimonji, and Tul met Pabs.
From now on, Tul will continue fighting hard to nurture their human heart!

what gets me is that if everyone woke up tomorrow and went ohhh the weight loss industry is EVIL evil like killing and disabling people for profit including children who don’t have medical rights evil, and was always an evil scam, and everyone in the industry woke up tomorrow and publicly apologized for being evil and donated every cent they had to helping people recover and their companies dissolved and blew up and every medical doctor woke up tomorrow and went ohhhh shit of course that was wrong and unhealthy for everyone, i have to go apologize and fix what ive done to all my fat patients, and every weight loss supplement turned into pure clear water and every weight scam business location exploded and was instantly transformed into a green park and playground and library and shelter, and everyone was suddenly awakened to the reality like a dancing plague had suddenly passed. if all that happened the industry could disappear tomorrow and literally nothing of value would be lost. at all. there is literally nothing good or redeeming about any of this. its pure shit. its entirely evil.
‘everyone at indeed dot com kills themselves’ comic is how i feel about the weight loss industry
zero patience for “irreversible damage” rhetoric because like… parents are allowed to do all kinds of other irreversible body modification to their kids and nobody gives a fuck. you can pierce your kid’s ears, you can sign them up for a sport that will injure them for life, you can provide or withhold medical care like vaccines according to whatever whims you like. i’ve mentioned this before but my mom forced me to get laser hair removal done on my legs when i was a teenager because my body wasn’t mine, the way i chose to upkeep it was a reflection on her. “irreversible damage” is very much part and parcel of the broader belief that parents own their children’s bodies.
