My name is Nankabiri Josephine, a transgender woman living in a Sudan refugee camp with other LGBTQ and other needy refugees. We face extreme hardship, including homophobia, hunger, lack of medication, bedding, and basic needs. Our group spends about $800 weekly on food and medicine, yet many members—elderly people, disabled individuals, and single mothers—are still struggling to survive.

We urgently need help for our community member, Jummy. A small cut on his foot became severely infected and is now filled with maggots. Doctors have confirmed the infection has turned cancerous and requires immediate surgery. Without treatment, Jummy may lose his leg or his life. We cannot afford the surgery.

Please help save Jummy’s life. Any donation, even $1, can make a difference.

Hello world, my name is Nakanbiri Josephine , a human rights activist living in Gorom Refugee Camp, South Sudan. I am the leader of 192 queer and disabled refugees in the camp.

We are facing severe hardship, including lack of food, medication, clean water, shelter, and other basic needs. Many people in my group—especially transgender refugees—experience persecution, discrimination, and constant attacks here in Gorom.

We are also suffering from frequent illnesses due to hunger and poor living conditions. Malaria is very common because we lack mosquito nets, and many people are struggling with typhoid and ulcers. Our situation is extremely difficult.

We have no way to meet these basic needs without your support. I kindly ask you to donate whatever you can—even one dollar can save a life. If you are unable to donate, please like, follow, comment, and share to help spread awareness about our situation.

From the bottom of our hearts, we extend our deepest gratitude to UNHCR and the Government of South Sudan for giving some of our queer 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ brothers and sisters a new chance at life by helping them find safety in Canada 🇨🇦—a place where dignity, peace, and hope can finally exist.

For many, this move was not simply a relocation, but a rescue from fear, danger, and the constant struggle to survive.

We also thank every individual who has stood beside us through compassion, donations, prayers, and unwavering solidarity. Your support lifted us when we were exhausted and brought light into moments that felt unbearably dark.

But our journey is far from finished. Many of us remain here—waiting, hoping, enduring. Our LGBTQ family still in the camp urgently needs your help to stay safe and to one day reach a future where they can live openly and without fear.

Please don’t forget us. Your support can be the lifeline for someone who has nothing else to hold on to.

Challenges we face as LGBTQ members in east Africa.

Hello, my name is Emily.

My fellow LGBTQ+ refugees and I recently moved from Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya to Gorom Refugee Camp in South Sudan. In Kenya, we suffered many challenges—lack of food, medical care, shelter, and proper refugee documents. Without documents like manifests or asylum-seeker passes, life became extremely difficult. We could not work, move freely, or access basic services, and we faced constant attacks and insecurity due to homophobia.

Eventually, the Kenyan government told us we were not wanted in the country, so we tried to seek safety elsewhere. We managed to reach South Sudan, but the situation here is also very hard. There is ongoing conflict, homophobia, and severe shortages of basic needs. Many of us are sick, hungry, and living without safe shelter.

UNHCR in South Sudan is helping us with the resettlement process. Some of us have completed interviews, embassy checks, and medicals. I have finished my resettlement interview and must wait until next year to know if there will be slots available for a safer country.

But while we wait, we are suffering—lack of food, medical care, security, and proper shelter. We urgently need support to survive during this difficult time.

If you can help or would like more information, please reach out. Your support could save lives.
