Tonight I can't stop thinking about how my favourite Sam Vimes moment isn't any of his triumphs, but instead it's that moment in Thud! when he stands at the bottom of his stairs and looks up just in time to see the Deep Downer enter Young Sam's nursery with intent to kill.
Truly, right, of every moment in every Sam Vimes book that's his truest moment of terror. The staircase becomes endless under his feet, he can't think beyond the impending violence and vengeance that he both expects to witness and to perform; the promised payment for the wild happiness of his life in recent months. There's nothing in his head but the understanding that he's about to lose everything he loves. And then, miraculously, he doesn't. And all he can do is clutch his son and sob like we've never seen him sob before - he'd be the first to say that if people were trying to kill him he was doing his job correctly, but that's nothing. People try to kill him all the time, it's a game to him now. This is different. This is Young Sam. Young Sam whose eyes outshine all the lamps of the world for his father. Sam Vimes has never had things to be afraid for before. This is the first time truly that terror has found him. We've seen him in the gutter, but this one beat is the lowest and most frightened he ever gets. He brought the violence home with him like dirt on his shoes and no matter what happens in that room, he'll be to blame for it. His son sleeping peacefully is the last thing he expects.
