hiccup is left-handed. by all means, this is a famous observation within the fandom! still, something i haven’t seen people discuss much is how significant it is for hiccup to be a vinstri (ᚢᛁᚾᛋᛏᚱᛁ, “left-handed man”) within his broader cultural and historical context. and what a good job the animated movies do with that!

it’s established within the HTTYD movies, and even the series such as RoB and RTTE, that hiccup is a lefty: he uses his left hand to write, sketch, and reach for objects! while it could be justified as it being simply an animation quirk, i bet it was a conscious narrative decision to act as a constant reminder of his character’s otherness, if nothing else.

so it’s no surprise that when hiccup first meets toothless in the woods, he’s holding a dagger in his left hand. he’s stunned and amazed because he managed to get a night fury, and his first instinct is to point the blade right at him without much thought. this is his natural state: we always tend to use our dominant body parts, especially when we are surprised, etc etc

but as he approaches toothless, he starts to hold the blade with both of his hands, using his dominant left to steady his trembling right. right then and there, he’s trying to be what he thinks a “viking” should be. that’s how we start his monologue:

even though i find it hard to believe that the animators and writers had any critical concerns for historical accuracy (or even authenticity, arguably), primarily using medieval scandinavian/“viking” motifs more for aesthetics, there are, nonetheless, a couple of interesting points here that we can connect to history... sooooo hold my hand and fall with me into this rabbit hole i guess 👇 (i will continue this below just so this post isn’t too long on everyone’s dash)

The room is falling apart. His room is falling apart.

Eyes burning, he slowly rises from the floor. His shadow a dark crimson, his lame leg aglow, because red is Red is RED

A cold gust howls in from the cracks, and the room breathes with it. It reeks of a familiar scent, but of what he can’t recall.

His room is a burning wreck. The wind warbles, cool and sweet.

He hears a twig snap. Hiccup rears his head to the sound and sees a large wild dog. The fur is so dark that Hiccup can barely differentiate the dog’s outline from their surroundings, but the Green eyes are vivid. The retina reflects the moonlight so perfectly it’s near illuminate. A pulsing light. The pupils white, milky disks.When it draws back it’s lips in a sneer, the gums all red, it has a set of human teeth. “You’ve called me. You’ve stolen from me, as I’ve stolen from you. What’s done is done,” the dog says. “What want you’ve of me?” Hiccup stares, uncertain, and tries to work his new mouth.

every day I learn bot comments on ao3 are stooping lower and lower

anyway if you get a comment like this, chances are that they are bot and their goal is to do whatever it takes to get you to delete your work, most certainly (from what I’ve heard) it’s because they want to “safely” steal your work, use it to train their ai without you being able to rightfully claim ownership of your work since “there’s no proof that the work was stolen/was posted elsewhere first by you” because the original source has already been deleted.

THEY ARE ALL BOTS. at first it was “ao3 is deleting fics and your entire account will be affected unless you delete the fics yourself” then it was “this work contains contents that are illegal and they have already reported you and your fic to the police” (yes, that’s how desperate these bots are), and now it’s this.

report their comments to ao3 for spam—in this case, specifically, I think you may be able to report them for harassment too—and don’t pay attention to them, most importantly don’t delete your works, don’t feel discouraged by their comments. remember that they are bots and they mass comment something like this on people’s works at random to get people to delete their works. (or even if they’re not bot, they are still pathetic bullies who don’t deserve your time or attention.)
