Building or adding modules for other device kernel modules

I have USB Wifi modules that are supported by OpenWRT natively; the kernel modules exist in the package list, but I can not download or install them due to the custom kernel package. Is there a best technique to add these modules? I have listed below the errors I'm having. I am asking this question generally, in case I would like to add other hardware in the future.

@suidroot OpenMANET is based on the Morse Micro OpenWRT build with some kernel customizations. Most kmod- packages will not be compatible from opkg.

You can always build your own firmware from our openwrt fork, or request that the kmod package be included in our releases.
