"Sorry, an error occurred" when trying to log in

Steps to reproduce

1. Start Element X from a completely new installation
2. Click Sign in manually, then Continue (this logs in to matrix.org, but my real account is on my own homeserver where the same problem happens)

Login flow continues

What happened instead?

Dialog box pops up saying "Sorry, an error occurred". I don't see any error in the log.
