Hey, so if you have Windows 11 installed and have been losing your mind over the fact that you can't find your own files because Windows is now prioritizing internet search results first, you can fix it by following this guide:

As someone with over 900 GB of intentionally and properly named files on her computer (I do a lot of digital art and digital media work that requires high-volume files that function off of dependencies), this feature was making me furious. I followed the above instructions and can confirm that the method outlined solves the problem.

I have just tried this, it works and the explanation how to do it was so user friendly and clearly laid out.

10 and 11 are also kinda secretly adding Windows Copilot to your computer when you're not looking. Even without software updates. You can follow this guide to disable Copilot

Guys lately there has been a concerted effort on tumblr to discredit both palestinians sharing their gfms online as well as the disapora palestinians who have been doing the taxing work of verifying palestinian accounts so that your money goes to the people who actually need it in Gaza.

Some big bloggers have been making posts calling palestinians scammers, and while id hoped it could just be ignored, users like @/trivi*llytrue with a significant following have begun to tell people to withdraw their donations from palestinian gofundmes and give it to unrwa instead.

Shahed and Shaima+Mohammed's gfms were specifically used as an example by user @/javert to "prove" that they're all scammers, because they have the same organizer, and we have already begun to see the repercussions of this. Someone withdrew their $500 donation from shaima's campaign today.

Idk how to explain what a staggering loss this is to the family- especially when both shahed and their campaigns are running on such tight deadlines right now, and when the movement on shaima+mohammed's campaign not being nearly as proportional as it is to the extreme urgency of the campaign.

The argument proving palestinians as "scams" seems to boil down to a simple distrust of the entire spreadsheet that contains months of hardwork from @/el-shab-hussein and @/nabulsi, which is crazy to me on both a common sense level (i literally remember the time when their respective blogs were personal blogs where they talked about their life before they dedicated it to platforming palestinian fundraisers) and on a human level (seeing the number of sheer number of palestinian users who have had to seek serious medical care because of the toll being exposed to their own genocide all the time has taken on them).

I can explain all i like till that theres a reason multiple gfms have the same organizer (v few people have the experience dealing with gfm's convoluted policies and beaurocracy, hence you may see same people managing multiple campaigns), that the so-called "opaque" vetting process has been explained over and over, i can answer your concerns about whether it is better to donate to western ngo's or people on the ground directly (it is the latter, due to israeli blockade and danger to aid workers in gaza rn), and can provide resources on identifying all the "scams" you are all so worried about losing your $5 donation to.

But no amount of explanation will be enough if you refuse to believe anything i, and more importantly, the palestinians themselves say because you are so committed to being apathetic to a literal genocide going on. Honestly the fact that you have not made an effort to listen to follow and pay attention to what palestinian users have been saying all this time has been telling enough.

It is heartbreaking for me personally to see these users keep calling good and kind people like shahed and wafaa (who is campaigning for her sister shaima and brother mohammed), both of whom i have talked to for a couple of months now and only want to help their families get to safety, being accused of lying about their circumstances for money.

It makes me want to rage and break things, knowing that they cant even have the luxury of privacy in their suffering because horrible people like this will call them fakers if they dont keep offering up proof. And even after they provide proof that they are "one of the good ones" and the threat to their lives is very real, i know it will still not be enough for some of you because you have already decided to choose to look away and pretend you're justified for it by unpersoning palestinians, just like all the people conducting their genocide.

I take it as a deep affront that you would call them fake, and that you would try to discredit the months of blood sweat and tears people like hussein and nairuz have put into this endeavour to help their people. If you believed any of that nonsense for even a second, you should be ashamed of yourself and you need to be forking over all the money you can spare and then some to rectify this RIGHT NOW

I feel like ive seen quite a few gfms getting passed around and ive observed that a lot of them have stories of such exceptional people who have achieved so much, or were going to before the genocide cut it off. And i really commend them for it, i really do.

But it breaks my heart that palestinians reaching out to us feel the need to have to prove that they are they are good people who are worth the support, like theyre only worth being supported if they had a good gpa or were exceptional in some way.

the kids online safety act passed the u.s. senate.

long story short (for anyone who hadn't heard of this before) the kids online safety act, aka kosa, is a bill that will censor online content and resources for lgbtq+ matters, reproductive healthcare, activism (INCLUDING PALESTINE AND LIKELY OTHER CRISES GOING ON LIKE IN CONGO OR SUDAN), mental health, etc. everywhere--its effects likely won't be contained to just america.

today, july 30th, 2024, the senate passed it 91-3. it has officially moved to the house of representatives.

is this a pretty massive setback? yes. do you have every right to be scared, sad, angry, or whatever else about this happening? absolutely. but should you give up hope completely? NO!

even though kosa passed the senate, the house is on break/august recess at the moment. we have around an entire month to get emails, calls, and faxes in to house reps, maybe more depending on when they decide to vote on it.

should it pass the house and get signed into law, we still have a whole 18 months before it actually goes into effect. this is plenty of time for digital rights orgs (e.g. fight for the future, the electronic frontier foundation) and other groups that oppose it to file a lawsuit against it. even if, worst-case scenario, it flies through the house immediately after the recess ends, we can still fight this up to march 2026.

so, yes, remember what's at stake here, but also remember that it's not over yet. we lost a battle, not the war.
