🇺🇸recall of previously-recalled genova canned tuna that accidentally got sold by major retailers in 9 US states despite deadly botulism risk🇺🇸

botulism is one of THE scariest types of food poisoning. food contaminated with deadly levels of botulism-causing toxins may not look, smell, or taste spoiled. there is no way to rule out the presence of those toxins through observation alone, and it takes a very small amount to kill someone. early symptoms of botulism seem like they could be from a medical flare, other food poisoning, cold, flu, a hangover. botulism starts out with symptoms like weakness, fatigue, nausea, gut pain, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech.

botulism progressively paralyzes muscles while the patient is fully conscious, until they can no longer call for help. botulism does not usually cause a fever. face drooping is one of the textbook signs as the paralysis spreads. patients are likely die without the antitoxin, mechanical ventilation, and other prompt medical intervention.

if you suspect you have botulism, go directly to the emergency room and immediately tell them you suspect botulism. minutes can be life or death. do not wait until after work, do not wait until after school, do not wait until morning, if you have nobody to drive you call 911 (or emergency services wherever you live). the antitoxin can prevent further damage but it cannot reverse damage that has already occurred, and that damage may cause lifelong disability.

foodborne botulism can take between 6 hours and 10 days after eating contaminated food before it starts causing symptoms.

and unfortunately, these specific canned tunas become more dangerous the longer they exist due to a design defect, so if you accidentally bought any of these, or still have any in your pantry, they are currently more dangerous than they were in the original february 2025 recall. the best by dates of the affected cans are up to 2028.

long story short: do NOT fucking eat these. I frequently get people joking about being willing to risk “the shits” on my posts. so I want to be perfectly clear that the risk with botulism is dying fully conscious while trapped in a body that is no longer able to breathe.

this fuckup is BAD bad.

El Segundo, CA, January 16, 2026 – Tri-Union Seafoods is cautioning consumers that a third-party distributor inadvertently released quarantined product that was associated to a February 2025 recall. The initial voluntary recall was conducted following notification from our supplier that the “easy open” pull tab can lid on limited products had a manufacturing defect that may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak, or worse, be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

some emphasis mine. some piece of shit third-party distributor (hey fucking name them maybe??) out there ‘inadvertently’ sold cans of food taken off the market due to a fucking botulism recall. these cans have a mechanical defect where the longer they exist, the more likely they are to grow clostridium botulinum, grow illness-causing toxins, and cause botulism. these cans of tuna are not safe.

so them being sold through 2026 actually made them more dangerous now than they were back in 2025. make sure you check your pantry for any of the originally recalled cans too, which were sold at dozens of stores under multiple brand names nationwide.

This current recall was initiated after Tri-Union Seafoods discovered that quarantined cases, associated with the initial recall, were inadvertently shipped by a third-party distributor. The impacted products were distributed to limited retail stores as follows:
Meijer – Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin
Giant Foods – Maryland and Virginia
Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions – California

right now, the confirmed sale of these dangerous recalled tuna cans is limited to those retailers in those states. but if those were retailers that got caught reselling food recalled for botulism risk of all things, uhhhhh…might want to check that original press release if you eat tuna and try and see if you have these in your pantry…

it is important to acknowledge that this seems to have been the fault of the mystery third party distributor selling dangerous recalled food, and then the fault retailers for not trying harder. if you find out who that distributor is, or that tri-union seafoods was more at fault here, let me (rune!) know!

alright tumblr says no tables for me (rune!!) yet. here comes some formatting. the following are for the january 2026 recall.

Recalled products include specific can codes and Best if Used By dates indicated on the bottom of the cans, and UPC numbers listed below:

Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 oz 4 Pack

  • UPC: 4800073265
  • Can Code: S84N D2L, Best If Used By Date: 1/21/2028
  • Can Code: S84N D3L, Best If Used By Date: 1/24/2028

Genova Yellowfin Tuna in in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt 5.0 oz

  • UPC: 4800013275
  • Can Code: S88N D1M
  • Best If Used By Date: 1/17/2028

Consumers should not use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled. Consumers feeling unwell should seek immediate medical attention.
If you have a recalled tuna can, please return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, throw it away, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product. Consumers can contact Tri-Union Seafoods at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com or 833-374-0171, if they have any questions or to request replacement product. The toll-free number hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST.

if you have an affected can, you need to treat it like a fucking explosive. do not sniff it, do not try and see if it might be okay, do not crack the lid, try to handle it as little as possible. you can get a refund or replacement but if you have to choose between chucking it now or risking someone else maybe opening it, damaging it, or trying to eat it – dispose of it.

as a quick refresher of the february 2025 recall (ALL THESE CANS ARE STILL DANGEROUS IF YOU HAVE THEM IN YOUR PANTRY OR FIND THEM IN STORES):

the tuna cans with the manufacturing defect previously affiliated with the original february 2025 recall were sold under the brand names genova, van camp’s, trader joe’s, and H-E-B.

only genova brand canned tuna has been confirmed to have been sold in stores up until 2026.

there is no comprehensive list of every store where the original defective cans were sold, but here is a refresher of the original recall and the tumblr post for that recall:

The impacted products were distributed to retail stores as follows:
H-E-B label - Texas
Trader Joe’s label – Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin
Genova 7 oz. - Costco in Florida and Georgia
Genova 5 oz. - Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas
Van Camp’s label – Walmart and independent retailers in Pennsylvania, Florida and New Jersey

added emphasis on “and independent retailers”.

make sure you check the february 2025 FDA recall announcement for a full list of affected UPCs, can codes, and best if used by dates, which range from 2027 to 2028.

and just to reiterate – these tuna cans have a defect in their design that promotes the growth of botulism. they are not all 100% going to kill you, but:

you do not fuck with botulism. out of all the types of foodborne illness on this planet, botulism is one of the worst. foodborne botulism is why you want to avoid dented cans, and avoid eating out of cans or containers that look bloated, or where the contents look weird. if you open a can and it looks weird, do NOT put it near your face, even just to smell. treat it like a biohazard.

food contaminated with a deadly amount of botulinum toxin may not look, smell, or taste any differently, let alone seem spoiled or bad. botulism is also why home canning need to be done very carefully. there is nothing you can observe about a food that can rule out the risk of botulism, so when there are signs and risks, they must always be taken seriously.

there is no amount of money saved that is worth risking what botulism does to a body.

check your tuna cans! these cans become more dangerous and more likely to kill someone over time. and remember, if botulism is ever in the question, no matter where you are in the world: the answer is the emergency room, immediately, DO NOT WAIT, and make sure everyone you encounter knows the emergency is BOTULISM.

thanks for reading, stay safe, and take care!
