A vampire becomes addicted to more than just blood. An unborn baby becomes the must-have accessory for a reality star. Smooth skin becomes currency in the new economy. At an annual Christmas party, fast fashion fights back. Bacon finds a new purpose when a hustler visits his client. A vintage-porn addict discovers new ways to satisfy his growing hunger with killer results.
In his first solo short story collection, Andrew Robertson explores the evils of men and the role they play in making the world a more horrific place; their vices, addictions, excesses, excuses and monstrosities.
“Dark, visceral, poetic and devastatingly honest, Robertsons writing lives at the intersection of unabashed hunger, desire, beauty and repulsion. These tales strike at the heart of the queer, gothic soul. They are beautifully painful and darkly necessary. A must read for all those who love unflinching art.” -Suzan Palumbo Author of Countess and Skin Thief.
"If InhuMANities is anything to go by, Andrew Robertson knows the inner workings of vile, dangerous men a little too well. These stories drip with cruelty, depravity, and razor-sharp wit — a tour of humanity’s worst instincts that’s so convincing you’ll start to wonder what he does when he’s not writing." -Warren Wagner, Author, The Only Safe Place Left Is The Dark
We love some fresh meat around here, so when I heard about this collection I was excited to see what Andrew Robertson had to offer. InhuMANities promised body horror, scathing social commentary, & wit throughout. It delivered all of the above tenfold; taking you on a journey from depraved to darkly whimsical, to tortuously unsettling in this succinct collection.
From vampires who get down & dirty, to the biting price to beauty, to the dangers of an ugly sweater invite. A horrific birth that became a poetic tale of revenge to a vintage porn fiend who got “lost in the sauce,” as it were.
Each story in this debut collection kept you guessing with where Andrew was going with it, because you knew from the first taste that he was going to make it gross/weird in the best way possible. Yet they didn’t seem one-note, as is the fall of many overzealous collections. Each story kept Robertson’s sharp, distinct, unapologetic voice throughout; even though the subject matters were pretty varied. I’m glad I picked up a new author to keep an eye out for future works from, as well as some new choice phrases/terms that I don’t think I’ll forget if I wanted to. It must be a Canadian thing. 👀
Andrew Robertson's InhuMANities is a gory, erotic, vicious collection that doesn't shy away from painfully topical issues. Focused on class inequality and what people must do in order to survive a world that often wishes they didn't exist, each of these short stories is a brutal gut-punch that forces us to look at the messes we've made. A bloody marriage of Anne Rice and Eric LaRocca, InhuMANities is warm and sensual at times while cold and cruel at others, and Robertson's writing is vivid spectacle. A must-read for body horror fans who yearn to find meaning in the carnage.
Sometimes it feels as if depravity is mankind’s best friend. Some people revel in their own dark deeds, while others get off on the degradation of others, and you can find all that wickedness and more in InhuMANities, the first solo short story collection by Andrew Robertson.
I was first introduced to Roberston’s work several years ago when we met at a horror convention, and I have enjoyed devouring all his work since then. He has a uniquely dark gift for finding and exposing taboos, then presenting them in ways that are both titillating and grotesque. But more than that, his stories always have a sharp edge of unflinching truth, showing the reader a part of the human condition that we wish we could deny.
Within the pages of InhuMANities you will find a vampire’s high stakes game turned addiction, celebrities converting motherhood to a fashion accessory, human skin becoming currency, and even fast fashion literally fighting back. These are stories of desperate needs, and the lengths people will go to fulfil their own depravity.
My favourite in the collection was “Pressed” about Iggy, a man addicted to a special kind of vintage pornography, and how a new technology may satisfy his increasing needs. The setting of Chester’s porn shack is so grimy, I expected my hands to be covered in filth after turning the pages. And although the characters are deplorable, the story was so compelling that I couldn’t put it down. This is a story where Robertson’s style cuts deepest because beneath the layers of dirty places and dirty minds, there are undeniable truths about the corruption of desire, wealth and influence, and about the bottomless pit of need that addiction creates.
I highly recommend InhuMANities to anyone interested in body horror and exploring the worst humanity has to offer. I’m looking forward to seeing what depravities Andrew Robertson will explore in the future.
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stained porn mags with stuck together pages.
With his book inHumanities, Andrew Robertson has lit the match on men's audacity, and now we are all eating the fire. This dark AF erotic horror short story collection brings you deep into the horrors of the male psyche and doesn't let go. Usually short story collections are tough to review because some stand out more than others, but here every single one is a banger.
I LOVE medical horror, and if you do too, make sure to check out Antenatal and Hamburger Lady (yes, this title is exactly what you think it is). At its core, these stories explore the way men profit off the patriarchal views of beauty and use capitalism to exploit the most vulnerable in our communities.
These stories resonate far beyond when I closed the book. Andrew starts each story with a creeping dread that builds until the ultimate gory climax. Then he leaves you at the height of terror with no aftercare. If you vibe with Eric LaRocca's short story collections, you will LOVE this.
This book is best read while buying vasectomy gift cards for all your guy friends. This book is best read while searching for women-only cults to join, deep in the woods. This book is best read with all the lights on, while eating 'pork rinds'.
Robertson collection is a wonderful mix or gore, and sex and horrifying events! It is well written and the art work is haunting. This collection stands out. Every story packs a punch. All in all a great read. Here’s my super short summaries of the stories included!
Sports Pig
This felt like interview with a vampire. That slick inviting prose. Only this vampire went for a ‘sport pig’.
Antenatal
It should have been the happiest time in her life… but she’s been mandated for testing.
Tyson’s Trick
A dilapidated diner. Tyson’s turning a trick.
Hamburger Lady
Kate’s disappointed in men. But how would she feel if she was the hamburger meat!
Pressed
He likes his girls still. This girl wasn’t still and it was about as sexy as a reluctant stool… this was such a unique story. Not like anything else I have read!
Horror is not for everyone. And body horror, specifically, is definitely not for all. From IMDb: "The body horror subgenre features the physical and psychological transformation, deformation, or degradation of the human body. In body horror stories, the body itself becomes a source of fear, anxiety, and disgust." It's one of the genres that most gives me the willies, but can't look away. Andrew Robertson's newest collection of short stories in InhuMANities was most engrossing (pun somewhat intended lol). Thank you to the author and Great Lakes Horror Company for my gifted copy for review! Six short stories make up InhuMANities. The first couple are comparatively gentle. With each story, the nastiness grows in intensity. There's wit and humour throughout, and clever endings for each - elements I love alongside my fear factor. Support indie, support horror. Definitely recommended for fans of the genre!
Fuuuuuck did I love this. Creepy, unsettling, gross, and seeping dread from it's pages. Each short story hooked me fast, and had me feeling wary and revolted the entire way through. The crisp endings bordered on comical with how succinct they were, and I loved the undertones of gluttony, greed and the perversion of men mixed throughout.
This was the perfect blend of stories, all of which were uniquely grotesque scenarios that sucked me in as the novel progressed. With such scathing diatribes, lasciviously bearing the seedy depths of society, you'll burn through this in one sitting like I did!

Thank you to the author, Andrew Robertson, for the gifted copies for myself and my delinquent book club. This was an absolute treat! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I felt something reading this, and frankly it takes a lot to get that out of me. Mind you, it felt grungy and dirty and horrid, but it was definitely there. Not for the faint of heart, but it says transgressive right on the label.
InhuMANities is one of the smuttiest and most unsettling books I’ve read in a long time. The stories are equally absurd, disgusting and brilliant as they plumb the various depths of (mostly) men’s depravity. Terrific body horror that will make you squirm.
I love a good short story collection, and InhuMANities not only has a beautiful cover and chapter art, but also delivers seven stories packed with body and medical horror, vampires, and even an ugly Christmas sweater.
My favorite story was definitely “Antenatal.” It follows a celebrity lookalike who’s about to have a baby at the same time as the celebrity herself and what starts out feeling like a fever dream quickly turns into her worst nightmare.
That said, all the stories are so creative it was hard to stop reading. I ended up devouring this book, and even after finishing it, a lingering sense of dread stuck with me, along with the need to sit back and rethink what I’d just read.
If you like bizarro fueled by gore and vivid visuals, you should definitely add InhuMANities to your TBR ASAP!
