I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading a sample of this, but it actually opened with a pretty good line.

But then it kind of falls flat on its face. The main character, Cyrus, goes from some pretty provocative narration about cutting a cake to slouching and slumping and sighing about how much he hates his office job, how he hates his boss, etc. etc. and how he and his friend wanted to get out of their "dead end" job in the department of records in city hall.

I did like the issues Cyrus had with the sensory overload and the description of that because hello that's me every day so I know there's potential in this book and there's little nuggets of good in here. And I think that's maybe what makes it so frustrating.

When Cyrus finally leaves, he specifies getting into a 2014 Nissan Altima (blue) that he can barely afford payments for. I googled out of curiosity, and at least in my area, a pre-owned Altima can go for ~$14,000 - $23,200; I don't know if they bought the car new or leased it or if it was pre-owned, but idk that's something. This will make sense.

He pulls up to his two-story home, and his wife immediately starts sniping at him for sitting down? For some reason? She said their son's football game was in an hour and she'd have dinner ready for him, but if she's worried about lateness, why not have Cyrus meet them at the game? Why not make a portable dinner or get something from a drive-thru to eat at the game? It seems like drama for the sake of drama to give Cyrus another reason to turn to murders instead of talking to his wife like a reasonable person?

"What position does Chris play again?" Cyrus asked Sara.
"Ummm, I'm not sure. I think he said he plays all the positions," Sara replied.
"All the positions?" Cyrus asked confused wondering why he even thought she'd know.

???? Maybe because she's Chris' mother and cares about getting him to the game enough that she'll get pissy at her husband for no reason or whatever? Everything about this is weird and doesn't sit right, like the book is trying to show everyone at their worst to set up Cyrus's circumstances, but it doesn't come off as authentic or realistic? It's almost lazy that everyone is presented as annoying or just awful (even though he married Sara because she soothes him with a single word?) to help justify Cyrus in becoming a super murderer, and it doesn't work for me.

They get in the car, and Sara scolds Cyrus for being a dick to the coach, and says something about how they can't afford the equipment to stay on the team. This conversation happens:
"Since when are we low on money?" Cyrus asked.
"Clearly, you haven't looked at our bank statements lately," she said, as she rested her head on her hand.
Sitting there in silence, Cyrus didn't have a response to his wife's news about their financial situation. ... Neither of them were making a lot of money. He barely made a couple of dollars above minimum wage working his desk job at City Hall...

Okay first, Cyrus was literally just saying they could barely afford the payments on their blue 2014 Nissan Altima. He then follows up immediately on his salary, which is "a couple dollars above minimum wage," so Cyrus is absolutely aware of their financial situation. The contradictions here undermine the struggle the book is trying to portray -- this family doesn't act at all like a family that doesn't have a lot of money. Like if they specified leasing their 2014 Nissan Altima, maybe they could get reasonable lease rates for like ~$100 or less and I'd believe them? Or if Cyrus had lost a job and had to take a job that made less money and he had to struggle to support his family? But this is a job he's had for years, so this isn't a new struggle. They've known for years what their salaries are and what they can afford.

Second, City Hall jobs are salaried jobs. All government jobs to my knowledge are salaried. Minimum wage rn is $7.25 -- I googled for the salaries in the Department of Records in Philly, because I don't know what city this book takes place in, but this is at least a guideline; the lowest-paid employee in 2016 makes $26,682. That's abooout $12 or $13 an hour. A pretty garbage salary in general, but not the worst -- and that's for a clerical assistant position; clerk typists and Title Registration Aide 1s make above $33,000 and that seems more in line with what Cyrus would probably be doing? Especially since the average first grade teacher makes $42,883 (according to Glassdoor), so even if they both make the bottom salaries in these sources I found, that's still around $50k a year which isn't too bad? I googled and in my area, housing, food, child care, transportation, healthcare, taxes, etc. can be about $65,000 (tho I can't say how they came up with the individual figures so take that with a grain of salt) -- if Chris has a way to work, then he might be able to bring in some money for the family.

But that's not what the book reflects. It's showing a middle class family that doesn't think about money the way someone who's really struggling and making minimum wage does? So instead of actually being in trouble, Cyrus comes off as petty and petulant and just a dick, and not a sympathetic character. Especially since he just gets super drunk and magically makes his way on foot across town to a bar? Like Cyrus drinks half a bottle of some unnamed booze (whiskey or vodka I'm assuming, since it "goes down hard" and he doesn't know why people like it) and is able to somehow walk across town and murder someone by stabbing with a blunt object.

Like, he followed him into an alley and decided to stab him.

There's nothing compelling or likable about Cyrus or the other characters, and the whole thing comes off as petulance and just? It doesn't feel like it's been well-researched, so I can't finish. I gave it a few tries and couldn't get past chapter 2, because I kept getting ripped from the story by things that didn't look right and didn't make sense and were just? Idk I couldn't get past the parts that I didn't like to be able to find things I did like? Is this supposed to be about a guy who just has a bad day and decides to take it out on everyone around him, or is it supposed to be about a mentally ill man? If it's the first, it's about a douche that I don't want to root for (or read about long enough to see him get caught); if the second, it's wildly inaccurate and a dangerous portrayal of mentally ill people as just A Bad Day Away from Doing a Murder (or seven). Like this isn't the Joker's villain origin story? I really feel like this could have been an interesting King-style exploration of a murderer if there was a little more research or care etc that went into it, but. This is gonna have to stay on my dnf shelf.

This book started off well, and catches you right away. Cyrus is an interesting character. Then the narration, entirely in Cyrus’s head, flatlines.

Sara is a completely unbelievable character and the dialogue in the book is terrible. She falls apart because there was a stabbing, a few streets away, shes a teacher and none of them can sleep, think, they are petrified. Okay since their car is a couple of years old, and its a 2014, I’m thinking 2016. And they live in America. Plus the police said it looked like it was committed by a family member. After that although what the police say is not revealed, and Cyrus is searching for what is happening, everyone else keeps hearing things “ they no longer think its a family member”. Okay? .

I kept wondering how a clerk at City hall and a teacher could not afford football equipment, and what possible municipal worker only gets minimum wage. Also, he could spend money on cleaning supplies, gloves, rope, new sets of clothes, chloroform, etc. Okayyyy

Then bi-polar. The writer should have researched mental illness.

And the lead cop - sure - he recognizes the voice. They are asking people if they recognize it yo contact the cops but no one will believe him.
Then of course the cops past legal issues. Guess what? They preclude him from being a cop. Plus he’s a drunk, who drives like that. Etc.

Then the second murderer, the best friend, the son, th cops partner,

Very disappointing, since it started off so well

Cyrus was completely ruthless!!! He had this desire to kill because it was a rush of adrenaline for him. He felt like he needed to complete this action, down to his very soul. There was a great twist near the end of the book, whom the secret murderer was (who was watching Cyrus from afar.) I really liked how Hugh's caught on to him, he just needed more evidence to arrest him. I'm left wondering, who killed Sara and Chris!? Looking forward to a sequel :)

Not bad for a debut novel, but I would have loved to see more insight in the mind of the killer... The end left the impression that this story is not finished, I hope there's a sequel on the way.

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Narrated beautifully by Matt Godfrey, Sadistic is a harrowing dive into how Cyrus, an average man with a boring job at city hall becomes a haunting murderer within in his home town. His first kill and accident that it first makes Cyrus believes something as wrong with him; but from second kill on, Cyrus comes to enjoy silencing everyone from jerks to unfortunate souls that just happened to become target of a murderous mind. At the same time Detective Hughes knows it's Cyrus behind the slaughter is desperate to convince his colleagues of what's her knows and stop it all as Cyrus take pleasure in taunting Hughes as the game of cat and mouse is on. When a mysterious man tells Cyrus he'll kill and blame it upon him, Cyrus could never imagine a friend could kill senselessly just to burn him; but Cyrus will do whatever it takes to keep his freedom and this addiction alive.

Highly recommended.

Sadistic is within Cyrus! Can he contain himself!?

Sadistic is a thrillful and so suspenseful book. The main character is Cyrus. Who is ultimaltely sadistic. I was hoping for more background information on Cyrus. Mainly why he was the way he was "sadistic". I honestly couldn't connect to Cyrus as I would've like to. Later throughout the book you do find piece of information regarding him but that's it. Why is Cyrus the way he is? I felt like the book started in the middle of a movie that never finished. I have a lot of questions that I was wondering or needed answered. I hope the author will publish a sequel.

Overall it was a great book. I liked how sadistic Cyrus was and he was living the double life which he hide his addiction from his loving family. His wife Sara and son Chris. Some parts in the book were intense which was refreshing for me being a true crime lover. This book was my type of book. I just wanted some of the dots to connect and make sense. I didn't like how fast the police, mainly one officer, Hughes, had caught onto Cyrus so fast. It would've been better if there were more suspense of who it was for the police. But I do have to say it was a great book! I'm just really hoping the author will publish a sequel so we can all get the answers we really need. Congratulations to Patrick on his first book. It was great. The ending shocked me the most but left me wondering and needing more!

This book was like no other book I've ever read/listened to.
The evil, justified by the main character was horrifying and understandable at the same time.
The book is so well written that I felt like in a rollercoaster - not sure what I was supposed to feel at any moment.
The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life.
I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

"They think they can call me Satan? They think they can decide what I will be called? This is my game, and I make the decisions."

This is my second read from this author, and all I can think is - Why didn't I know about him sooner?

This one left me perplexed at my own emotions about the main character, Cyrus. I mean, he is doing unspeakable, horrific things, basically on a whim. He just feels the need to go brutally kill a random person. There are no connections to the ones he chooses - they are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Well, except toward the end.

But all the while he is conflicted within himself. He knows he shouldn't be doing this, and he knows what it could ultimately cost him, but he can't stop himself. Then he gets in to a cat-and-mouse game with Detective Hughes and.... game on.

So, while I was horrified at what Cyrus was doing, I couldn't help but be rooting for him. Isn't that weird? I wanted him to get away with it. it was like I thought of him, not as a bad guy, but a good guy that does bad things. Hughes became sort of the villian for me. I'm not sure what that says about me, but I can say I loved the book, the storyline, and the characters.

I wonder how many Cyrus's we all pass by on the street and never know what twisted thoughts are going through their minds. Are you next?

Sadistic is the dark and disturbing tale of a man whose taste for the kill lies dormant for years until one day, quite accidentally, it is awakened. What is his response? Does he make every attempt to suppress this horrific trait? Not at all. He relishes it, nourishes it, and remains constantly on the prowl for a new victim.

In contrast, he is employed, has a family and is socially functional. While he manages to juggle his life as a productive member of society and an impulse-driven killer, it becomes more and more difficult to maintain the gap between the two. Add to this mix a detective who zeroes in on him, and who is determined to bring him to justice whatever it takes, and you have what may have begun as a cat and mouse hunt gradually evolving into the spider seeking to trap the fly. The question then becomes, who is the spider and who is the fly?

This is Patrick Reuman’s first novel, and what a powerful read he’s given us. I highly recommend this book, and am very anxious to read his next.

Left with questions

At first this book was hard to get into. As I kept reading it slowly started to pull me in. I wish there was more back story to the characters then just the few paragraphs in the middle of the book. Sometimes it would jump from one character to the next without warning. I will say by the end of the book I was wanting more. I hope there will be a sequel, because there are a lot of unanswered questions. There are some grammatical errors but nothing that makes you put the book down. All in all it was a good book for a debut author. I wouldn't mind reading more of his work as it is published.

I liked this book and thought it was very good for Mr Reuman's debut. Cyrus was a strange character and I wanted to continue with the story to discover how far the killings went, would he get caught etc. I also found myself wondering about his family. The detective was a good character and at times I sympathised with his frustration over the murders.
The ending I felt was very unusual and left some questions which perhaps was the writer's deliberate tack to keep us wanting more.
I believe Mr Neuman is writing another book,I look forward to reading more of his work. He shows promise.

Not bad for a first novel by a young author.
About a family man turned serial killer for some inexplicable reason.
I think this killer would have been caught no later than chapter 11 in the real world, probably sooner.
Needs better editing and spell checking.
There is not much detail about the characters in this book, so it is very hard to care about them.
Just about everything in this book is from the perspective of the killer. Almost nothing from the perspective of his intended victims.
Still, I look forward to more from this new author, I suspect he will get better with time.

I liked the book. I think I needed more of a lead up to the characters and more of an introduction to the main characters mindset as to what would of made him snap like that in the first place. I had a hard time understanding why a terrible boss , in the beginning, since we have all had terrible bosses , would make him start to kill so suddenly. Overall though for a first published book it was good !

Patrick Reuman's "Sadistic" is a serial killer novel. I don't usually read horror, so I don't have much to compare this to. The writing really flows and it draws you in. You feel like you're right there with Cyrus. Good descriptions, you could feel the emotions (and lack thereof) during the whole tale. The urge to kill was palpable. I can't wait to check out "Edge of Madness" also from Reuman. A great first book from a new author.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

This was a good read for a debut novel but had a lot of spelling and grammatical errors. This being said, it held my interest throughout and left me with questions at the end so could there possibly be more to come? Questions such as who killed Cyrus's family and what happens to Detective Hughes?

I really enjoyed this thriller! Cyrus is a guy you can understand with a wife and son whom he loves but everything isn't perfect in his life and a choice he makes takes him and us down a twisted, thrilling path. I didn't want to put it down! This is the debut novel for Patrick Reuman and I can't wait to read his future books!

It was an alright book. I didn't think the characters had very much depth to them, and I thought, at times, the main character of Cyrus was kind of stupid. But it did have some exciting and gruesome sequences in it, so it was alright.

I enjoyed this book. Okay a bit lucky that a killer managed to get away with so many murders but I really liked Cyrus (if you can warm to a killer!) and I liked the twist at the end (with his wife and son). Looking forward to Sadistic 2.
