The Way: Through a Field of Stars

There is a secret code of the Knights Templar on the Camino de Santiago...

Isabella cursed her father for sending her on this quest, but it was her only chance at freedom.

Sent by her father to locate the Knights Templar's greatest treasure—and save her kingdom from ruin—Princess Isabella of France finds one of seven secret doors that unlocks the Templars' mysterious treasure. With this discovery, she expects the mission to be easy. But when she is ambushed on the Camino de Santiago, Isabella is not only forced to seek refuge with the exact company she was sent to steal from, but she's unexpectedly reunited with her one true love, Etienne.

It's not long before the past catches up with Isabella and Etienne. Now they must both decide: to love again, or to remain loyal? Etienne is tied to his vow as a Templar and Isabella to the will of her father.

Isabella's quest leads her to love, friendship, and self-discovery—but if she's not careful, it could also lead to the end of the world.

Even though this novel is a work of fiction, if you visit the Camino de Santiago today, you can still see the symbols and runes that inspired the secret Templar code as well as the towns, cathedrals, and castles from the story.

This historical fiction is the first book in a trilogy that combines the cipher-breaking mystery of the Da Vinci Code with the life-altering spiritual lessons of The Alchemist.

I believe we are all called to adventure. Whether we answer this call by traveling around the world or by living vicariously through our favorite characters—we are born to explore.

In all my adventures around the world, nothing has affected me more than my pilgrimages along the Camino de Santiago. It was here that I was first told about a secret code of the Knights Templar on the Camino. This code inspired the Through a Field of Stars series. Since my first pilgrimage in 2017, I have walked over 1,000 miles across Spain doing research for the series.

I have traveled the miles that my characters have traveled and learned the lessons they have learned. I write in the hopes that my books will inspire you to have a life-changing adventure on the Camino de Santiago.

B.J.S.

But now that we have that out of the way, let me tell you a bit about my books in the THROUGH A FIELD OF STARS SERIES:

book one - THE WAY: THROUGH A FIELD OF STARS

There is a secret code of the Knights Templar on the Camino de Santiago...

It's not long before the past catches up to them. Now they must both decide: to love again, or to remain loyal? Etienne is tied to his vow as a Templar, and Isabella to the will of her father. As Isabella and her unlikely companions' journey across Spain, they unlock the Templars' secret codes, face immortal shadows, and discover the wisdom of the Camino de Santiago.

Isabella's quest leads her to love, friendship, and self-discovery-but if she's not careful, it could also lead to the destruction of the world.

book two - BACK: THROUGH A FIELD OF STARS

Hunted by the seven deadly sins, two unlikely heroes must deliver a secret message for the Knights Templar across the Camino de Santiago before it’s too late. Faced with unthinkable trials and life-altering lessons, this adventure is filled with mystery, humor, and self-discovery.

The Way through a Field of Stars is a historical fantasy book that narrates the story of Isabella of France on her journey to Santiago de Compostela, seeking information about an ancient treasure well kept by the templars so she can gain her freedom and win the approval of her father. Along the way she meets a variety of travelers, mercenaries and knights, some of them joining her on her path, but one of them sticks out the most: Etienne LaRue, a templar knight and Isabella’s former lover. They embark on a journey filled with danger, mystery and sacrifices; unveiling the secrets from the renown military order, fighting for their lives against the moors and shadows, and rekindling an old love that was broken by betrayal.

Among all the fantastic elements in the book, and how loyal Skillen tried to be to the history of Spain, Christianity and the Templars, one thing kept me in awe throughout the middle of the book. Skillen took me by surprise when I found not only knights, adventure and romance; but deep philosophical thoughts. He also adds to his narrative symbols and puzzles that really existed in their own time and were used by the templars to conceal their knowledge among their brotherhood.

Taken from Chapter 14, page 104; words fromThe Alchemist, they said: “[W]e are all made of the same thought. [...] One thought split into every person you have met. Everything you have ever seen, smelled or touched.”

Chapters 14 and 31 were my favorites, how the characters engage with these mystical entities that share with them knowledge that we all have forgotten. Living in the present moment, emptying oneself to be filled anew with experience, change and growth.

I have to point out that Mariano was my favorite character. I connected with Mariano in a way I wasn't expecting to connect with any character. He is driven by passion and not devotion. I felt his sorrow, his anger and his relief. To me, Mariano’s feelings were the most realistic ones among the pilgrims.

Now, not everything was perfect and rainbows. There is one thing that made it hard for me to read the book in the beginning. Knowing that some of the characters were based on real life people, and there being little to no description about them. I had to do my own research to find out what they looked like, and how I was going to picture them inside my head. But then when it came to original characters, I did not know how to imagine them without falling into stereotypes.

Same thing came for the environment and the scenes. As you progress into the book, you see Skillen incorporate more and more descriptions, but at the start it’s mostly action, dialog and description of emotions. Some scenes were even confusing because I was not entirely sure where the characters were standing.

Overall The Way through a Field of Stars is a great book, unique and with a plot that doesn’t break into multiple confusing subplots. It is easy to read and it will keep you entertained as you unravel the secrets within its pages. I hope I can get my hands on the second part before it sells out, and eventually read all 3 books.

This novel has it all! It's an epic adventure story that intertwines history and spirituality, in a fictitious journey across the Camino de Santiago. I hiked the Camino de Santiago last year and it was so fun to recount all the locations in the book and to compare the story to my own experiences. The novel centers around finding a secret treasure of the Knights Templar on the Camino, and the characters end up finding hidden codes along their pilgrimage. This is supposedly based off strange symbols that the author saw on his own journey there, and now I totally want to go hike the Camino again with a new set of eyes. The book has elements of fantasy which add to its uniqueness and pushes you to think about your own self growth. I'm not a history buff, but loved how the author combined historic characters with characters based off his own Camino. (I only know they were historic characters because there's an appendix in the back of the book which notes this. lol) I highly recommend this novel and am looking forward to the following books in this series!

I backed this book on Kickstarter so I could get a signed copy. I'm very glad I did because it is well-written with a clever plot and creative use of historical details to flesh out the story. Mr. Skillen provides notes to clarify the history (which adds to the understanding of the history), but you don't have to read them to be caught up in the story. The characters are well-rounded and believable and even the fantastic elements work well and fit the story. The story of the Knights Templar is well-known, but this book puts it in the context of the people involved - not all of them come off looking good! The book is the first of a trilogy, and I will definitely be backing the subsequent two volumes, but while the story has some loose ends leading to the next book, it is nicely self-contained in itself.

I came across this book at a FanExpo. I was intrigued and decided to stop by the booth with this book. I left with the series in my hands. Never did I expect the adventure that followed. This book kept me guessing and thinking and searching for answers along with the characters. Many things happened that I never would’ve guessed. There were also many theological ideas that I wasn’t expecting but am excited to think about further.
The only thing I didn’t like were the typos I found, but that’s indicates the job of the editor, not the author.
Overall, an amazing work that has my brain spinning, my heart pounding, and a desire for more. On to the second book!

Read this book if:
- you’ve walked the Camino de Santiago.
- you’re planning to walk the Camino de Santiago.
- you enjoy historical/fiction.
- you can read!

I had the opportunity to walk the Camino de Santiago in early autumn of 2022. It was the adventure of a lifetime, everything and more that I had hoped it would be. Along ‘The Way’ I met Brian and his wife as they were in the middle of launching the third book in Brian’s ‘Through a Field of Stars’ series. Talking with Brian I was intrigued by this tale based along the very path I was taking, set over 700 hundred years ago, but about pilgrims - those making their way to Santiago de Compostela - such as myself.

Upon returning I got myself a copy and instantly was drawn into a tale of adventure, love, mystery, fantasy and one that kept me engaged and wanting to know what came next at every turn. Brian’s style is such that there are layers to be peeled back as you go, unpacking and exploring ‘the code’. As someone who has walked - and hopes one day to walk again the road from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela - as the characters journeyed through different towns, cities and areas across Northern Spain, I could visualise their surroundings and was immediately in the midst of the story.

I would highly recommend The Way: Through a Field of Stars, as the bullet points above illustrate, for all. A page turner, easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable. Onward to book two, ‘Back: Through a Field of Stars’!

Buen Camino!

I'd learned of this book through mutual friends shared between Brian and myself and had placed it on my reading list in preparation for my own Camino journey. I hadn't done much research before I purchased it and so I did not realize it was historical fiction. As a book about the Camino, I wasn't completely immersed in the pilgrimage experience. But as an action adventure story set on the historical pilgrimage, I enjoyed the tale very much. I pushed to finish the book before the end of 2021 to continue my pattern of reading a book a month about the Camino. But it didn't take much work to dive in and immerse myself into this story. I'll look forward to the next installment of the adventure which I intend to read soon.

I met Brian at ECCC 2025 and immediately fell in love with the ideas he conveyed about his book. The fact that he went to great lengths to research the book, including living the Camino journey, made it even more enjoyable and immersive, experience wise. The characters are very charming and flawed, allowing for a ample character growth as the series progresses.

Even though it is a book about Templars and faith, the narrative doesn't come across as preachy or overly pious. The love story is diverse and believable. The plot twists intricate but not distracting. The code breaking sequences had an Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft meets Dr Langdon vibes. It was totally worth the investment!

The author is extremely passionate about his work and it shows. I can sense the improvements made as the story evolves, and the amount of care poured over every page. I liken this book to the fantasy YA out there - the love is pure, the intentions good, and the romance is closed doors. Can't wait for the next episode!

It's as exciting as the Da Vinci Code, but with more interesting historical elements and positive life lessons. Skillen masterfully weaves an entertaining fictional thread through an actual historical setting that makes me want to take a pilgrimage on the Camino. Buy it. Read it. Love it.

I don't often find myself reading historical fiction, mainly because I like to steep myself in another world, but I found this book to be a balance of both immersive fantasy and well-researched history. I had the privelege of meeting and talking to the author at a convention recently and was very intrigued by this series, and started reading this first book the night I got it. He informed me that he had traveled the real life Camino de Santiago just as the characters do in his book. The settings that are described and the sensory details used really buff your mental picture throughout the whole story, making you feel present on the Camino with the characters as their adventure unfolds. This dedication to the experience really shone through with how well incorporated the historical details were added into the story, and there are footnotes throughout the book that are addressed in an appendix in the back to further the reader's understanding of the many details that are included. I found myself unable to put this book down the more I read it, spending hours reading it and not noticing. Along side the story and lovable band of characters that you meet along the way, he adds a code system that is gradually exposed more and more to both those in the story and the reader, which makes the story just that much more engaging. There are a lot of Christian themes throughout the book, which I was worried might have been a bit of a turn off for me since I am not a super religious person, but I found that most of the time it was discussed in such an ambiguous way that anyone from any background could really ground themselves in the concepts described without having a personal connection to the religion. The overall themes of self discovery and reaching one's true self by living in the present were very inspiring, whether you believe in a higher power or not. The one big criticism I have with this book, albeit following the conflicts between actual historical factions at the time, was having people of color being cast in the shadow of barbarity. The main perspective comes from French nobility, and her love and acceptance for Etienne at a time where everyone else looks down on him because of his skin color seems to force his infatuation towards her, and she becomes the revolving point in his desire to achieve righteousness and rekindle their relationship. I think it takes a bit depth out of his individuality and character, to be doing everything for this one person simply because she showed you the love and acceptance that everyone else should have as well. Despite this, their relationship becomes much more complicated beyond that as they both explore the themes mentioned earlier. All of the characters are very dynamic, and they all react and change drastically as the story progresses, as a result of their meeting each other and adventuring along the Camino. Their friendship and love for each other only ever grows even when you think the worst has happened between them. They always find a way back to each other, which is very important to the ending of this book, and I am eager to see how they find their ways back to each other in the next book. Overall, it was a very heartwarming fantasy with religious themes that weren't overbearing, but rather spiritually refreshing, and furthers your understanding of and connection to the characters and their relationships throughout the story. All of the characters develop a depth of personality that leaves you feeling just as close to them as they become with each other. I think this is a great book for anyone interested in dipping their toes into the world of historical fiction, and wanting a lighthearted fantasy to engross themselves in.

I have been on the Camino of St James in Spain on five different occasions, having route along the route where this novel takes place. I love the sense of history in this novel - it makes me feel like I am back on the Camino during this time period in history. The novel is very well researched and feels very authentic to its time period. When I am walking on the Camino, I sometimes stop in the middle of the trail in the middle of nowhere, feeling the presence of the steps of all those millions of pilgrims that have gone before me throughout the centuries from the 9th century when this pilgrimage began. The story of the Knights Templar and the way they protected the pilgrims and the power that they had are essential to this story. Great read!

I wish this rating system allowed half stars because this was better than a three star for me but not quite a full 4 stars (4 stars is my rating for books I love start to finish, but this book was closer to 4 than 3). I bought this book from the author, and I think his wife, at NYCC {2024) and they couldn't have been a nicer couple. I bought this book with no expectations--mostly, they were so nice I just wanted to support the author. Serendipity. I really enjoyed this read. A historical fantasy, as his wife described it, based on a real pilgrimage, with engaging characters and a fun plot. After a strong start, the middle had me wondering if I'd be interested enough to read the second book. Well, it finished strong and I'll definitely read book 2. I have to know what happened to entire cast of characters. The author developed the characters very well and I really care about their future outcomes--that's the grand prize for me when reading any genre. I'm so happy I stopped at Brian's table in New York.

BLUF: Good story, light fantasy, written like a YA novel

I liked the book, but have some quibbles about it. The story is good, characters are well done. The author does not spend a lot of time on detail; issues will be resolved within a paragraph, maybe a sentence. Weddings, fights...things get resolved with few words and no extraneous detail provided. In general, this actually works; it allows for the story to move along without getting bogged down. There are a handful of times that I think more detail could have helped, but overall I'm not unhappy with it.

The author's writing style is what I'd call 'short'. Sentences aren't long and at times they feel unnecessarily simple and to the point. A little more verbosity and embellishment would have helped.

Overall, it's a good story and I'll look for book 2.

I’m excited about this book. I typically don’t read fiction, but this author really seemed to knock it put of the park with the excerpt I had the privilege of procuring.

You’re not going to want to miss this one if you are a lover of the journey of self discovery, adventure, and existentialism.

Michael J. Sullivan recommended this book so I checked it out on Kickstarter. This looks like a truly unique story. Part historical, part puzzle, spiritual, action adventure. This book has it all. This has become my most anticipated new book of 2020. And yes, I am a backer.

You definitely want to get the hard copy. It's definitely a page turner and I couldn't swipe fast enough on the Kindle App.

Having walked the Camino myself, I was really looking forward to reading the novel and "revisiting" the locations that have been so important to me.

The novel absolutely delivers. You get invested into the characters from the start and the book captures the essence of what it means to walk the Camino so well. Plus historical fiction and secret codes, could you ask for more?

I'm always up for an adventure and reading something different than my usual "human potentiality" books! I loved feeling that I was taken to another time and place. The pace was fast which I prefer and not over-descriptive. I fell right into the story and was swept away. My ancestry is part French - so I was intrigued by the French princess. I didn't know much about the Knights Templar besides watching a few movies so reading their involvement was education. I'm now interested in the Camino de Santiago hikes as well. I just purchased book number 3 and am ready to read it!

I really wanted to love this series. I met the author and I have been to some of the places in the books, but I struggled to be engaged.
I love the plot and story line, but feel it is rushed. There is little character development in the beginning and before you can even realize there is a conflict, we have jumped to another part on the road.
Perhaps it is because I am used to more detailed fight scenes or where I can really dive into a world.
