a lot of my autism masking is just making myself more palatable for other people and my therapist said "does spock make himself 'more palatable' for others?" and had me promise to keep unmasking like:
the classic trope of "what if you went to a town and it was weird" never fails
You know, one of the most shameful consequences of scifi/game authors not knowing shit is cyberpsychosis, or Essence, or whatever in-universe asspull for a mechanical limiter on how much cyberware you can cram into a character sheet.
There is an easy excuse in real life! You may not be able to get both a pacemaker and a DBS device because they're both pieces of sensitive equipment that could theoretically interfere with each other, and nobody engineered them not to. Trivially you can extrapolate this to all cybernetics. If your various augs weren't Specifically designed not to mess with each other (and of course the various megacorps might take things a step further, making their shit actively hostile to mix-and-matching), you might have problems; and obviously, the more pieces of hardware you've patchworked yourself with, the worse things get. You'd have to be one real crazy motherfucker to tell a back-alley doctor to load you up with whatever they've got.
It's more grounded and more realistic and less shitty and it actively enhances the atmosphere of cyberpunk in a way that "losing your humanity" does not. we are missing out on much because none of these writers know anything about how medtech works

Love how this implies that after the downfall of humankind that doge is the species to supercede us
Lets hear it for Malicious Compliance
*filming literal mold* “There is a bit of a damp problem…” The signs saying “DON’T BUY THIS” are a beautiful touch.
at the risk of being cringe with everything going on — this week, the last six months, the past five years — i keep thinking about that one quote from the great gatsby
“they were careless people…they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”
it’s just every day now, huh.
the person who realised you could rearrange the letters in gossip girl to read “go piss girl” truly one of the great minds of our generation, madam your legacy
hey it’s ok if you lost your ai virginity back when you were uneducated. a lot of posts go like “reblog if you have never ever used generative ai and never ever will!!!” but it’s ok if you have used gen ai before and it’s even ok if you used to think it was cool, back before you understood what it really was and how it worked, either because no one had taught you about it and you discovered it on your own or because the only education you had received about it was from the tech bros. you’re not a burger with a bite out of it for having used ai. ok
It is 100 percent okay to stop using it today and join the "boo AI" club.
This isn't a purity thing. This is a "everyone stand with us against destroying the environment and giving asthma to poor people" thing.
Did you know that when one community says no to an AI data center, they specifically search out communities with fewer resources? Communities that can't defend themselves? And the pollution 100 percent affects their health and wellbeing, in addition to burning through our already scarce drinking water.
You can stop using character.ai today. You can say "I listened to the facts and stopped." And another thing: don't you think it's a bit more impactful to have used it, stopped, and then you're in a position to say how little it helped? How doing things for yourself improved your life?
also posts in the spirit of "if you've used AI even ONCE your soul is tainted!!!!" can't be great to those with OCD
y'all I used to mess with generative AI all the time back in like 2020-2021 before chatgpt was a thing and it generated entertaining nonsense
i had a paid subscription to inferkit for my amusement. it was a whole thing
Thing is. Since I played with LLM's back when they were in their early stages. I know how they work. specifically i am intimately aware of why they aren't, and can't be, "intelligent," and why there's no way they could possibly work well for the tasks they are being used for
you see, the earlier models offered sliders to manipulate the amount of "randomness" in the result and how the "randomness" was applied. Set the sliders low, you get endless loops of repeating words and sentences; set the sliders high, and you get nonsense gobbledeygook
furthermore, chatGPT has a sort of framing device where all the outputs are formatted in "person talking to another person" form; earlier models didn't use this and they just generated "more" of whatever you input
it made it very hard to miss that it is a statistically likely sentence assembling machine
i tried chatgpt when it first came out and i was like wow. i can't do anything to manipulate the result? this is stupid.
of course that was on purpose because if you give users any insight into how the responses are being assembled, the illusion of it being like, intelligent and able to talk to you falls apart.
Please imagine some warrior culture (e.g. Klingons) getting super into video game esports in a relatively war-less setting and just getting insane about it
Like everyone at first thinks "haha, they probably don't understand video games because they're a bunch of bloodthirsty brutes" and it's a fuckin Space Orc Sweep at the Space Esports Tournament. Orc Devin, a scrawny nerd of an orc, gets absolutely HOISTED by his yoked-to-the-nines parents who are just so proud that their weakest son is their most victorious warrior. His fighting is done with more finesse, battling with his hands, mind, and eyes instead of RIPPLING BICEPS and POWERFUL GUTS and BARREL-CRUSHING THIGHS, but he battles nonetheless. His space hometown honors him with his own sword and a plaque. They rent out a space billboard bragging about how Orc Devin kicked everyone's asses and was the Most Badass Motherfucker in this cool new digital warfare they are now starting to get probably too-into as a culture.
WHERE NATURE DID NOT FAVOUR HIM AT BIRTH, HE SOUGHT OUT BATTLE NONETHELESS.
CRUSHING NOT THE BODIES OF HIS OPPONENTS, BUT THEIR VERY MINDS AND SPIRITS.
LIMITED NOT BY THE REACH OF A SWORD, HIS CONQUESTS AND VICTORIES SPAN THE UNIVERSE.
A NOBLE WARRIOR INDEED.

"AI virginity"
on GOD we are not beating the puritanism in progressive spaces allegations anytime soon
i dont know why people are like ‘we need to bully people so they are more normal’ when if the internet has been anything its been a series of longitudinal studies showing that prolonged large scale bullying tends to lead people to becoming increasingly weird, paranoid, sometimes off-putting, traumatized, emotionally troubled, ethically disregulated, etc. even unethical modalities like behaviorism don’t focus exclusively or primarily on punishment. like people should literally just be honest and say they want more bullying because they like to do it and have fun hurting other people
My Hater Post. Sorry
ALSO THIS
i do love that gandalf presumably threw a hobbit at a problem one time, and then it worked so well that he just. kept doing it.
the wizard equivalent of turning it off and then back on again is just "have you tried introducing a hobbit into the situation?"
Stop hiding your tags
Okay but it works
Collective psychosis. Full cultural reset. Everybody is coming to the cottage I guess.
