Socket 370 was a relatively memorable socket, introduced with the Pentium III to end Slot 1’s run. In some ways, it was a return to the previous norm of providing PGA CPUs and sockets. A couple of Intel Pentium III generations and Intel Celerons were released in this form, as well as competing CPUs from VIA which were socket compatible.
Intel Celeron Mendocino
The Mendocino core Celerons were the first to feature on-die cache, and often overclocked quite well. They were also used in SMP configurations on the iconic Abit VP6 despite having not been intended to do so. Cleaning these chips was quite a challenge due to the waxy thermal compounds often used.

Intel Celeron SL35S 366Mhz
Intel Celeron SL36C 366Mhz
Intel Celeron SL37X 400Mhz

Intel Celeron SL3FL 466Mhz
Intel Celeron SL3FY 500Mhz
Intel Celeron SL3LQ 500Mhz
Intel Celeron SL3FZ 533Mhz
Typical Cooling Solution
For the lower end Celerons, Intel typically bundled a fairly simple heatsink fan unit, in this case, one without RPM monitoring capabilities.
Intel Pentium III Coppermine
The second generation Pentium III, these ditched the Slot 1 form altogether and their chips are still in some motherboards around here – so only the spares are pictured. Their top dies are completely exposed, and improper heatsink installation can chip or crack the chip from a corner rendering them useless.

Intel Pentium III SL3XW 667Mhz
Intel Pentium III SL49H 866Mhz
Intel Pentium III SL4MF 1000Mhz
Intel Pentium III SL52R 1000Mhz
A more recent version of the CPU with the newer marking format. Note the layout of the capacitors on the underside has subtly changed as well.
Intel Celeron SL4AB 667Mhz
This appears to be an early Celeron that’s very similar to its Pentium III counterpart, but with restricted cache and bus speeds of course.
Intel Celeron SL4P3 733Mhz
This seems to be a later Celeron. Notice the lack of capacitors on the underside, the lowered bus rate and increased Vcore requirements.
Intel Celeron SL5XT 1000Mhz
This is the Celeron version of the SL52R, which has its cache slashed in half and the FSB limited to 100Mhz. It didn’t make a bad overclocking candidate though!
Typical Cooling Solution
Similar to the one above, a upgraded simple heatsink fan unit was provided that had RPM monitoring.
Higher performance units were often supplied with beefier heatsinks, although this one with a plastic retention clip mechanism!
Intel Pentium III Tualatin
The third generation of Pentium IIIs looked a little different due to the addition of an integrated heat spreader. The Celeron versions of these were commonly known as tualerons. This series marked the end of the Pentium III, soon to be succeded by the inefficient Pentium 4 which initially struggled to match even the best performing Pentium III CPUs.
Intel Celeron SL5ZF 1000Mhz
Intel Celeron SL5ZE 1100Mhz
Note that this chip was made in the Philippines rather than in Malaysia as other chips were.

Intel Celeron SL68P 1200Mhz
Intel Celeron SL5ZJ 1300Mhz
