  1. They mentioned solar inverters as something to monitor via Home Assistant. This is essential if you want to be able to control loads (such as EV charging) to maximize charging when there is extra energy from the sun. It’s crucial at off-grid setups like I have at my Adirondack cabin. I have my own homebrew system that I use instead of Home Assistant, and getting my data from the cloud (hosted, initially I think, on Chinese servers) made me die a little inside. So I hooked up a 3.3v-level serial cable to the dongle and eventually figured out the structure of the data packet coming from my SolArk inverter. It was a huge satisfaction to get this right. As a bonus, I get data every 20 or 30 seconds instead of every six minutes. And none of it has to leave the premises (though I do log it on my Apache server hosted in the Netherland).
