reading nabokov is maddening because his writing is so playful and evocative and effortless and english isn’t even his first language. he’s doing things in a second language most people could spend their lives trying and failing to replicate in their first language. makes me feel like this

    image

“my very photogenic mother died in a freak accident (picnic, lightning) when i was three” like come ON how did you write the funniest sentence ever by adding a two word parenthetical. leave something for the rest of us

Mercury, Venus, (uh oh) Pearth, Mars (phew), Djupiter (never mind), Faturn ⁉️, Luranus (kinda French actually), Pneptune

some people will really come out here like “well if a trans man has been on testosterone for 10 years and has top and bottom surgery and doesn’t interact with people who knew him before he transitioned or only interacts with people who aren’t transphobic and doesn’t present as feminine or nonconforming or otherwise queer and is strictly heterosexual and never wants to have their own children and never has any reproductive or otherwise gendered health issues at all and never has any negative experience with the legal system and doesn’t experience interpersonal abuse that could require them to seek outside help and doesn’t experience any lasting trauma on the journey to getting to that point in life then trans men Basically aren’t even oppressed and have it pretty easy in life when you really think about it”

and people are just lining up to be like “Huh Wow…. Pretty Messed Up When You Think About It That Way” like damn, guess nobody’s oppressed anywhere for any reason then 😭

I tend to have people around me who don’t interact with transmasc people very much, so they end up asking me a fair number of questions about All That. and there’s a lot of pondering of the whole “are trans men oppressed/do they benefit from male privilege” thing.

and one thing I always end up saying, especially to the people my age or older (I’m in my early 50s) is something like: “you know, I’m not going to say I don’t experience what we used to call ‘passing privilege’ on most days, because I do. and yeah, it’s possible that if I was willing to do [all the stuff listed in OP’s post above] I would nearly always benefit from moving through this world being perceived as a man. although that would require me to be perfectly stealth under every circumstance, which might work for a while, but eventually I have to go to the doctor’s office.”

this usually causes them to have an “oh yeah!” look of surprise and they start nodding. I then continue:

“honestly, the expectation that a trans man will and should live stealth by default is wild, because when I was coming out in the 90s we used to have a term for having to do that. it was called 'living in the closet’ and it was largely seen as a bad thing. back in the day we wanted to burn the closet down!” you can see the light dawn in their eyes, especially the older queers who remember Harvey Milk and how he advocated for queers everywhere to come out and destroy the closet forever.

anyway having to live in the closet in order to be safe is bad and we should remember that’s what a lot of people expect transmasc people to do and it’s pretty fucked up actually

so you’re telling me one of the characters in wake up dead man is a formerly beloved author who, after the culmination of his wildly popular fiction series, has been radicalized online by right-wing conspiracy theorists, has abandoned his successful writing career in favor of spending all of his time on social media (and what little writing he does put out on his substack is praised only by his staunchest supporters), and is SO convinced that everyone’s out to get him that he’s dug a literal moat around his (distinctly castle-shaped) house?

    lol. lmao, even.

Skeletor has forever destroyed our ability to come up with voices for skeleton characters.

this is like saying NASA has forever destroyed our ability to wonder what it’s like on the moon. like we can still use our powers of imagination if we want to but the question’s pretty much fucking settled.
