Verifying Your Age

In this Guide

Here at Tumblr, we require minimum ages to create and use an account, as outlined in our Terms of Service. In some regions, to comply with local laws, we may ask you to verify your age to keep using your account or to access certain types of content.

If we need you to verify your age, you’ll be prompted to provide additional information to help us confirm you meet the age requirement.

We are implementing an age-assurance process in partnership with k-ID, a third-party platform dedicated to empowering and protecting kids and teens by enabling age-appropriate online experiences. k-ID adheres to internationally recognized privacy and security standards and is a valid licensee and participating member of the Entertainment Software Rating Board’s Privacy Certified Program (“ESRB Privacy Certified”), and is trusted by many other platforms.

When you complete the age assurance process, you will be able to choose from different verification methods offered by third-party age-assurance providers. These providers collect the information you provide and only share the result of the age assurance process with k-ID and Tumblr.

Please note that neither Tumblr nor k-ID retain any media (e.g. ID documents) you provide for verification. This information is deleted by the third-party age assurance provider once your age group is confirmed. In addition, the video selfie used for facial age estimation never leaves your device, and Tumblr and k-ID only receive the outcome of that process.

You can read more about the personal data that k-ID collects and how they protect it, and the available third-party age assurance providers in the k-ID privacy policy and security center.

How to complete the age assurance process on Tumblr?

Depending on your location, you may choose one of the following methods:

  1. ConnectID – You can verify your age through a connection with your Australian bank account. Please note not all banks are supported.
  2. Facial scan – This is an entirely on-device method that estimates your age from a video selfie. Facial scan data is only processed locally and never leaves your device, i.e. it is not shared with k-ID or Tumblr.
  3. Photo ID – You can scan your government-issued photo identification and k-ID will validate your ID document and age. Your ID scan is only used to verify your age, and is deleted once the process is complete.
  4. AgeKey – You can use your reusable, digital credentials to prove your age without sharing your identity.

The information you provide for age verification is only used to confirm your age and not for any other purpose. It won’t:

  • Show up on your blog
  • Be visible to your followers
  • Appear anywhere else on Tumblr

While the result of the age assurance process will be stored internally and associated with your account, Tumblr will not receive, save or otherwise store your facial scans, bank account details, or anything you provide during the age verification process.

For more information, please review k-ID’s privacy policy, as well as our privacy policy.
