10 Dance

This week I started reading 10 Dance, by Inouesatoh, ahead of its live action adaptation release. I assumed that I would finish reading all 7 volumes by the middle of December, but I read everything in two days! The story is captivating, the art is incredible, and the level of research Inoue-sensei had to do, not only to create the narrative but to explain dance techniques, is admirable.

I saw the trailer of the live action first, and I was pretty sure that I was being immersed in a dramatic plot, but it turns out that 10 Dance is also hilarious. There are details and eccentricities about characters that genuinely made me snort, like Suzuki's English dialogues being represented like this to show that he has a sexy Spanish accent:

I mean, seriously... this is priceless. 😆

Some points of the story made me quite pissed too, because it pictures very well how elitist and political these dance championships are in reality. These are not the only type of contest that have predominantly an audience and participants like this, but it was nice to see this discrepancy reflected in the backstory of one of the main characters.

Needless to say that Suzuki is my favourite character. As a South American living abroad, it's factual the level of effort anyone from the Global South has to put to reach just the basic of what Global North raised people have for guaranteed. This will obviously vary depending on social class, ascendance, etc, but it still is the reality of the majority of us.

I hardly ever read something without my social justice views. While I understand that this is just annoying for some people, it's worth mentioning when authors do it right. Inoue-sensei also made a great representation of Cuba, without going too deep into the politics behind it.

Finally, she also brings about something relevant in one of her acknowledgments, when justifying why she brought Fusako and Aki's POV (who are the two main female side characters):

Her point pretty much shows how creators sometimes have little or no control over misrepresentation in BL media. Women are frequently portrayed as villains or excluded, but instead of throwing a backlash against authors, it's best to think that demands reproducing these dynamics should be the target.

I am very much looking forward to the live action now! :) The fact that a massive budget has been placed to its production is a relief. It's one of the few cases where I believe a live action suits the context better than an animation, unless the studio animating it was similar or superior to MAPPA (the studio behind Yuri!!! on ICE).

One time I was leaving a friend's place and an older lady with basically no English came up to me and communicated that she was very cold and needed a ride. She pointed to tell me where to go.

I got there and her daughter or granddaughter came out and was like omg her phone died we were worried

And then the older lady said something and the younger lady translated.

"She knew she could trust you because you have pink hair"

I thought it was funny at the time. But when I think back on it I think she was basically saying "you had a visible sign of not vibing with the system I was afraid of"

Be weird. Be colorful. Help random people.
