    Hey there, Minnesotan here.

Are you outside of Minnesota, but want to know what’s going on with the ICE occupation? Check out:

    • On Site a local independent news organization covering accurate news here.
    • Toussaint Morrison, who writes for On Site but has a lot of good coverage
    • Georgia Fort, an independent journalist covering what’s happening on the ground
    • And of course, the videos being posted directly to social media from people on the ground.

National news is not covering everything that’s happening here. (Almost like that’s on purpose.) But these are helpful, local sources to Minnesota to provide an accurate depiction of what’s really happening here.

Are you outside of Minnesota and looking to help?

    • Donate to the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee
    • MN ICE Watch not only sends updates about federal activity, but also highlights individuals affected where you can donate or send help to our neighbors impacted by ICE.

These links go to those sources’ Instagram profiles. And I will edit this post with more, it’ll remain a living document.

A final note: You may have seen posts on social media about what it’s like here. Believe them. It is that bad. It is that scary. They are kicking doors down. They are demanding to see identity papers if you’re simply walking on the street.

My sister is a teacher, and they were driving around her school yesterday. A middle school.

They are offering people money to out undocumented immigrants or protest organizers. That link is a firsthand account of someone who was detained, and asked those very questions.

    They are taking our neighbors.

    This is an occupation.

I don’t have a lot of followers, so hoping the tags can help spread this far and wide.

I started listening to the cree radio station because its the only one left in my range that doesnt play alberta separatist ads now and those make me see red like some sort of bull, which is not safe while im behind the wheel of a vehicle going 110

Why haven’t they told me about the cree all-purpose radio station sooner. They play everything from the 50s to today. Half of their ads and one of their shows is in cree which I do not speak a lick of but thats fine, they play banger music. They give me local news updates that arent dripping with UCP cocksucking. They tell me about things that affect a demographic I otherwise hear very little about by virtue of being a white guy in alberta.

We are holding hands. We are learning about other cultures. We are listening to 60s rock and roll and then an elder will tell us stories about his youth. I am enamored. I am in love.

Lots of people in the notes have asked me to drop the radio station im talking about here. If youre in the Edmonton area the frequency is 89.3, and when we went on a trip recently we got pretty reliable signal all the way to Ponoka. If youre outside of it or international you can get the live broadcast at ravenradio.ca

They also have a retro hour at noon every day and do language lessons for allies

    89.3 The Raven
Playing a little bit of everything from the 50's to Today! Alberta's Best Rock
    89.3 The Raven

    for easy access

Not to be an annoying USian butting in (but you know how we are…) but this is fascinating! When I visited Canada my one and only time so far in 2023, the place we spent the most time was Calgary, Alberta. Being Texans, everyone kept telling us “oh that’s like the Texas of Canada” my one IRL Canadian friend included. I definitely saw what they meant (by way of rodeo, beef, oil industry stuff) but no one ever mentioned ALBERTA SEPARATISM. That’s the most important and unbecoming “samsies” I’ve yet heard of so far. Yech.

Anyway, this station sounds awesome and if you can listen to it, you should.

Previous poll remade because I forgot a whole century the first time, this is what I get for doing this on mobile LOL

Think of the oldest song that you know by heart — can sing the melody and any words it has from memory, without looking it up. Search the name of it in Wikipedia, looking for when it was first documented with both the melody and (if applicable) lyrics you know, together. When is it ACTUALLY from? (If it’s way newer than you think, you can’t switch to an older song. Answer based on this one you initially THOUGHT was the oldest.)

    20th century (1900s) or later

    19th century (1800s)

    18th century (1700s)

    17th century (1600s)

    15th-16th centuries (1400s-1500s)

    13th-14th centuries (1200s-1300s)

    11th-12th centuries (1000s-1100s)

First millennium CE (if you are not a musician, no you don’t, go back)

It’s the Seikilos Epitaph (circa 1st century CE), oldest complete melody found

    See Results

I am a music historian with a PhD and the point of this poll is that the vast majority of people don’t actually know much music from pre-1500s or so, and most music that people think is ancient or medieval is actually far more recent.

There are no options before the first millennium CE because the Epitaph of Seikilos is the oldest complete work of music found anywhere in the world, and it’s around 2000 years old. If you think you know something older than that, either only the text was written down (e.g. Biblical, Vedic and Greco-Roman hymns) or it only exists in fragments (e.g. the Hurrian hymns and Orestes stasimon). Which is to say, it does not count for this.

If it fits into a few of these potential time frames, pick the one that’s considered the most likely. If historians genuinely have no fucking clue, THEN you can go back and try with another really old song.

screenshotting and reposting this because OP made it non-rebloggable but I think it’s important to spread it and don’t mind blocking post notifs if it blows up on my timeline

    (all images have alt text)

tumblr user queen-mayhem: I used to be mad about "whole language" reading approaches in theory but now I work with school-age kids and I am mad about it in practice. reblog by OP: the word is "commute" kid: complete? me: do you see a P in that word? kid: uh.... compare? me: where are you getting a P??? sound it out. kid: com... complete? me: is that a P after the M? sound it out. kid: *stares blankly* me: [oh right, nobody taught them how to do this. fucking hell...] okay, we'll do this together [like it's kindergarden even though you're thirteen years old...]. what sound does C make?ALT
reblog by OP: I am not a reading teacher or a dyslexia specialist but I'm having to do remedial phonics instruction for middle schoolers because nobody ever taught them how SO THEY CAN'T FUCKING READ reblog by OP: I cannot overstate how much these kids are just making wild guesses when I ask them to read something. Because that's what they were taught to do. If you don't know a word, use context clues and make a guess at what you think the word might be. Which is a fucking insane approach to reading, by the way, and I could rant about this forever because this makes absolutely no sense and I cannot figure out how the entire educational field was duped into thinking that this makes a lick of sense. But I also want to emphasize that even kids who are decent readers have this problem. I work with some kids who straight-up can't read, but even my kids who absolutely can read will just guess wildly at an unfamiliar word. Those kids will go back and sound it out if I force them to, because they can read, so they have the necessary decoding skills. But they have to be pushed to do it and reminded several times to quit fucking guessing and read the actual letters on the page, Jason.ALT
reblog by OP: For example. I have a kid who is actually a pretty strong reader - probably one of my best. The word was "disagreement." He made a couple of guesses - some nonsensical, but after pushing him to sound out the word, he got closer. He kept saying "dis-age-ment" and "dis-argue-ment." And I said okay, let's break this word down. Is there anything in here you recognize? "The beginning is 'dis' and the end is 'ment' like argument, but I don't know the middle." Great! Let's pull the middle out. I wrote the word "agree" on the page. Do you know this word? "Age? Argue?" SOUND. IT. OUT. "Ag... agriculture?"ALT
reblog continued: Jason the love of god. I drew a line in the middle. Ag/ree. Sound out each part. "I don't know." JASON. I wrote them out on opposite sides of the paper. Ag...........ree. What sound does ag make? "Ag?" YES GREAT FANTASTIC. Now come all the way over here. Ree. Sound it out. "Are?" JASON. R. E. E. "Rey? Ree?" Yes, thank you, it's Ree. Put it together. "Ag...ree? Oh! It's disagreement!" YES. EXCELLENT. THANK YOU. WHY WAS THIS SO HARD?ALT

At this point tumblr user @/ms-hells-bells reblogged with this link:

How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have

reblog by OP: #however the situation is better in liberal states that invest substantially more money into education than conservative states As much as I wish that was the case, "Jason" and all of his classmates are students in a strongly blue state with some of the highest educational spending per student in the country. I'm not saying the situation is better in red states - I've seen what my friends who are teaching in Texas are dealing with and the situation is dire. I'm just saying it's less of a red/blue or funding issue than you might imagine.ALT
reblog by boppin-robin: If you are an educator who has discovered you were taught the whole language approach in sum or in part, SUNY is offering a 45-hour online microcredential in the science of reading that is free to educators in NY and MD, and only $50 for everyone else everywhere else. It is comprehensive, straightforward, and will absolutely get you and your students on the right track. If you, like OP, are a teacher of older children and find yourself needing to know how to teach remedial phonemic awareness and phonics skills without knowing where to start, this microcredential will give you what you need so you can help your students.ALT

The Full Body Project is a book of photography by Leonard Nimoy that features a group of women involved in fat liberation. They were the Fat-Bottom Revue—women who worked in film, theatre, and art and who formed the first all-fat burlesque performance group. The founder of the Fat-Bottom Revue, Heather MacAllister, was an advocate in the LGBT rights movement, the fat acceptance movement, and in particular was a champion for fat lesbians.

Something that I have noticed is I know almost nobody my age that goes to a food pantry. I know people who regularly run out of money for food and in general have to eat an unsuitable diet because that’s what they can afford and they still don’t go to a food bank, im not sure if it’s because they’re embarrassed or maybe if you didn’t grow up going you don’t know much about it but if you’re financially struggling I really recommend it. And look into other options for food assistance too like community fridges and gardens and other programs that can assist you, where I live Salvation Army pays for an allotted amount of grocery delivery for low income people every month, in the summer farmers take excess produce to the library to be taken by anyone who needs it, etc. There are a LOT of resources for free food that you can look into especially if you are literally not eating because of your financial situation

Btw if you have dietary restrictions you can often let them know and in many cases they’ll prioritize certain items for you

    • Global map of community fridges
    • Urban Harvest - global foraging maps
    • Food Not Bombs Global Chapter Locations (mostly vegan!)
    • USA - Find your local food bank
    • USA - Meals on Wheels free or reduced cost food delivery (age usually 60+, check your specific area’s eligibility
    • Map of US food banks that can accommodate gluten-free

Good thing to have on hand in the midst of food stamps issues
