Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) continually hurts my brain with how it’s simultaneously one of the most accurate and one of the least accurate adaptations.
There’s so, so much that they got right:
- Dracula’s mustache
- Jonathan’s hair turning white
- Lizard fashion
- Jack’s drug use
- Mina’s typewriter
- Jonathan’s diary
- All three suitors appear
- Dracula de-aging
- Lucy receiving blood from multiple suitors
- Sterilizing the boxes with the Eucharist
- Lizard fashion
- Wolf through the window
- The group splitting up on their way to the castle
- Dracula’s weird hairy hands
- Jack examining Lucy at Arthur’s behest
- The boxes being square
- Dracula’s mortal wounds (sort of)
- The fact that a ton of the dialogue is directly transcribed from the book
And yet the plot. And the characterization. And the overall vibe.
I don’t understand how Coppola did this
add me to your discord server so I can do the online equivalent of arriving at a party saying hi to the people I know then standing awkwardly in the corner for the rest of the night
