T, 10.7k, Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov, Shane Hollander-centric character study

No one is going to win a Pulitzer interviewing him, and Shane is okay with that. He spends most interviews rephrasing the same five sentiments—I’m happy we won. We need to work harder after that loss. They are a good team; the win was hard fought. They are a good team; there is a lot for us to take away. And finally, I love playing on this team, for our fans.

Then Ilya Rozanov bursts into his life, and answering questions becomes a little more complicated.

or: Shane Hollander, interviewee, throughout the years.

my fic! a character study of shane hollander written by a hockey enjoyer who spends too much time thinking about how players are interviewed/talk about themselves and wants to apply those cliches to shane's journey being a #minority in hockey culture!

Pinned Post self reblog read all about itttt etc

What makes episode 5 so incredible in my opinion is that Shane never asks for more. He says "you feel it too, right?" and "I can no longer pretend I don't like you". He never says "I want more from you", which is a very standard thing people say when they want more out of a relationship.

Later in the episode we learn that something that kills Ilya is that everyone who never appreciated him always asks for "more, more, more". Shane hears that but doesn't understand, of course. It doesn't matter that Ilya said it, because Shane didn't understand it. And yet, he never asks Ilya for more. Even when he asks Ilya to come to his cottage, it's not "do this for me", it's "it is going to be nice, you will be able to be yourself, to rest" and what Ilya hears is "I just want you, close to me. As you are. As the person you have been for 10 years. I just want you" and now im crying

my reading of Wake Up Dead Man is that Benoit Blanc's mother has recently died and his approach to the entire investigation is informed by this

butch-king-frankenstein

  • when introducing himself to Father Jud, Blanc says "my mother is—was very religious" which is not a slip you make if your mother has been dead for a long time (compare to Knives Out where he says "my father was a police detective" with no hesitation)
  • his litany against Christianity in that same scene feels very personal, which could be for any number of reasons, but I think the line I mentioned in the previous bullet point is meant to provide context for it; he's expressing anger towards his mother and her loyalty to the church during her lifetime
  • similarly, when Blanc has his "road to Damascus" moment and his speech about giving grace to those who deserve it the least but need it the most, he's not really (or at least not only) talking about Martha; he's realized that he needs to find forgiveness and grace for his mother as well
  • Blanc's mother being dead would make him a thematic parallel to Monsignor Wicks, whose own unresolved trauma with his deceased mother informs his hyper-religious worldview (which stands in opposition to Blanc's hyper-rationalist one)
  • it also seems very intentional that when Father Jud prays for Louise, it's because her mother is dying and she doesn't want their last words exchanged to be in anger

I think I'm really onto something here

wake up dead man hm!

My FAV part of your fic, other than Shane going off on the media (thank you thank you) is the moment in the fic where Ilya and Shane are touching under the table at All Stars but none of the other hockey guys know. Like Shane having the confidence to put his hand on Ilya’s thigh and Ilya lightly touching his wrist..! Amazing. Love it. Would die to know what ilya’s pov was at that moment (have not read the books)

hello!!!

thank you so much for you message! i also love my ASG bar scene so sooo much i know in canon they have to have their “what are we” convo but i think this is such a turning point for them feelings wise that i wanted to focus on that–shane just stares at (ogles) ilya all weekend and finally realizes ilya may just be his future and he wants it so bad

i think ilya is just so relieved that shane is NOT engaged to rose landry–he doesn’t know what exactly is going on in shane’s head but he’ll take what he can get and if that’s being squeezed in next to shane at a tiny booth that’s great! when shane first refutes that all ilya cares about is getting phone numbers, he sort of freezes thinking that shane’s really had too much to drink and is going to say something about how ilya really hasn’t been getting many phone numbers lately because of his shane-shaped Problem (not that shane knows about that at this pt in time).

but INSTEAD shane outs him as a hopeless loverboy fool. stares at shane during alllll their games and thinks about how well shane is doing. internalizes stats without meaning to. thinks that chirping someone like shane w stats would probably get him rly bothered so he keeps doing it. his eyes r just drawn to shane and he can’t help it! so the wrist touch is kind of a under the table you know why i chirp you w stats. when mary oliver said attention is the beginning of devotion, yknow.

truck.soul marnz how do you feel? heated rivalry <3 hope that makes sense!!!!
