So Carol has the same problem Skyler did as far as viewer reception goes, i.e. she is a woman who is angry for justifiable reasons who lots of people still dislike because either 1) they don’t think she has any justifiable reason to be angry; or 2) they acknowledge she has a right to be angry, but still dislike her for being so annoying about it

So why do people find Carol and Skyler so “annoying?” Well, a big part of it is that they’re women who are angry. People really, really, REALLY hate it when women show anger. An angry woman is deeply repulsive - she’s shrill, she’s annoying, she’s hysterical, she’s exaggerating for attention. Like, yeah maybe she’s got a point, but can’t she be nicer about making it?

And Carol and Skyler are especially annoying because they’re angry about something that it’s deeply taboo for women to be angry about - they are angry about being provided for. They didn’t ask to be provided for in the way the Hive and Walt provide for them, since their brand of providing comes with a body count - but they still ought to show some gratitude. Look at all of the effort that’s been put into keeping them in comfort! How DARE they be angry about any of it, when the only thing the Hive and Walt want are for them to be happy and comfortable?

Except, of course, that isn’t the only thing that the Hive and Walt want. Providing for Carol and Skyler is a justification for their pursuit of power. But that’s neither here nor there. Carol and Skyler should still shut up and take it.

Both Carol and Skyler try to reject this “generosity,” but ultimately give in after enormous pressure and psychological manipulation. But now they’ve got a different problem, because accepting this “generosity” means that they REALLY ought to be showing gratitude and obedience. But they don’t. They’re still angry, they’re still acting out, and that’s infuriating. Don’t the Hive and Walt deserve a little credit for loving them so very much? And don’t they know that the Hive and Walt are doing terrible things to provide for them? That makes them complicit! Maybe even more to blame than the Hive and Walt, if you think about it, since the Hive and Walt are doing all of this for them. Of course people find these ungrateful bitches annoying

Look. Look I’m not reading as much fanfic as I used to.

But in case any young people out there need to hear this- it is very normal for gay people to just. take turns. For a lot of the stuff. That some of you. Seem to think are static, binariatic, opposing personality traits.

ngl some of yall treat “top” and “bottom” like they’re god given roles or immutable personality traits and not just like. where their body happens to be in relation to someone else’s rn

Being real for a second, some people use “top” and “bottom” the same way others would use “man” and “woman” and it SHOWS

Also you guys use “top” and “bottom” (literally just sex positions. Literally just Penetrating With Something or To Be Penetrated) to mean the same thing as Dom/sub type roles in the bedroom and it shows.

And to match the last addition above, frankly 90% of fandom people don’t get to make fun of ancient Greek men’s ideas about gender and sexuality (that even between two guys, getting fucked is inherently Submissive and makes you The WomanTM, fuckING is i herently dominant and makes you Still a Real ManTM). Y'all think the exact same thing deep down, just like a lot of the society you grew up in.

never ever trust anyone who uses “listen” as a synonym for “obey”

I think this was the first concrete anti-authoritarian principle I ever adopted. by the time I was 6 I had recognised how parents and teachers LOVE to say “listen to me” when they mean “do what I want” and I knew I hated it. it betrays an insufferably entitled belief that the only reason someone might not be doing what you want them to is that they haven’t properly received your instructions. that they couldn’t possibly have the agency to hear and understand and then decide differently.

by age 8 I had started to retort with “I’m listening, I just decided not to do it”, which my dad (anti-establishment academic) loved and my mum (a cop in all ways except literal) hated.

fast-forward a few decades, and I now realise that when my ex-spouse started using “you’re not listening to me” to mean “why aren’t you doing what I told you”, I should have ended things right then and there. looking back on it there was no coming back from that.

anyway, pay attention to the casual assumptions about authority embedded in the language people choose. it tells you so much.
