New outfit dropped!
To recap this project: I wanted to make a comfy dress that I can just pull over my head, as an alternative to my fitted gowns and their ordeals of buttons or lacing. Sixty buttons before breakfast is not feasible, not when the bacon is getting cold!!
A lower class 14th century dress seemed ideal - it would be plain, sturdy, and very comfortable. I had a thin 100% wool twill in my stash that needed a project. Because the dress itself was very simple (it’s a basic rectangles and gores dress), I wanted to put effort into the making, and thus it is entirely handsewn with waxed linen thread. It’s taken me… probably over 100 hours (maybe closer to 150?) over the course of about six months.
I really enjoyed having something simple to work on! There are no tricky bits to this one, it’s just running backstitch, backstitch, and miles of whipstitch. My biggest mistake was cutting one sleeve two inches short (still not sure how I managed that??), but I decided to piece it, and I now feel like it adds to the garment’s intentions as something that may have been worn by the lower classes.
I’m extremely happy with how it turned out overall. It is easy to put on, extremely comfortable to wear, and looks great imo! It’s definitely going to be a camping staple I think.
