Nobility in Baldur's Gate

Edited to add: I never expected my silly, niche post to get as much attention as it has! I'm giving you all forehead smooches! 😚💋 I've gone through to clean up some things up as I've found new information. I also added a list of nobility that I've found in game and other sources to the end of the post. Thanks, y'all! I'm glad I'm not the only one to wonder about this stuff. Good stuff in the reblogs, too!

Baldur's Gate has dug itself deep in my brain, so I apologize to my poor mutuals who didn't follow me for BG3 content getting this onslaught of posts. Please bear with me until my hyperfixation wears off. 🙏

Now, I'll admit up front that I'm no expert in DnD lore*, so if I get things wrong, please feel free to correct me or just add in stuff I may have missed. I'm going off of what I've found in-game and my Google Fu skills.

That said, I do know enough about DnD to remember that Baldur's Gate nobility are called patriars, and that there are only a relative handful of actual patriar families. I was thinking about my "canon" Tav, Velassa, and her background in BG3. She's a modified OC that I plunked in-game during Early Access, so I made her a noble. It was just part of her existing character that I didn't think too deeply about. It was only after I starting playing that it occurred to me to wonder what exactly "a noble" is to a native Baldurian.

That got me digging a little more into the current state of the Baldurian nobility as of BG3. I don't know who--if anyone--needs or wants this, but I put this together for myself and decided to share it for anyone else who might be interested. I realize that this is probably pretty niche and it's rambly and long af, so I'll put it under a cut.

Here is the list of Baldurian nobility and patriars I’ve found so far, under a cut for those who want to see it.

Edited to add: I’ve added more patriars and what each patriar family is known for, income especially. Not all of these people are in BG3, but most of the ones who aren’t are either 1.) important “historical” patriars to know about, 2.) Important to the background of BG3 even if dead or not mentioned, or 3.) patriars that should still be alive, even if not in-game.

I said I’d try to post more about my OCs, so here’s a rather crunchy WIP of Velassa. I’m a slow artist, so who knows when (if…) the full thing will be done …

The quality here is terrible, which is only partially because it’s not fully rendered. I’m both pretty proud of this so far, but also a little unhappy. I’m at the annoying place of being skilled enough to know there’s something that’s not quite right, but not able to tell what it is. Story of my life, tbh. 😔

So, if I’m going to blabber about my favorite OCs, it seems right to start with Velassa, my “canon” Tav for BG3! She’s definitely the one I’ve posted about most on here, albeit scattered around in various places. And given that BG3 is the game that has currently prompted me to post recently, it only seems fair.

Ahead are words. Many, many words …

ia rambles about... fandom stuff ia personal baldur's gate 3 bg3 oc: velassa fairhaven imaginary people post long post character backstory my poor girl has seen too much :( she needs a vacation fr the typical lawful good cleric trope tends to be so boring but why? *slaps roof* You can fit so much trauma in there! :) something something being evil is easy but being good is hard

I’m in something of a self-indulgent mood for once, so why not bother tumblr about it? :D

I ran across a poll recently that asked how many OCs you had, and I had to think about it. For my purposes and by what I assume was meant by “OC” in the poll, I’m only counting my main, “personal canon” version of customizable game protagonists and/or characters I’ve created for fandoms, not characters in my own original stories.

I had … significantly more than I expected, but also, probably not all that many – if that makes sense? Given a little wiggle room on what counts, I have around 30, including protagonists I created for games that either died in Early Access, changed so much that the original concept no longer works, or for one reason or another I quit playing/interacting with the game/creator. Obviously I’ve played way more games than that, but these are the ones who have endured long enough for me to spend time thinking about them.

Of course, having tallied them up, I kinda feel like talking about some of them. Or maybe drawing them … it’s been a while since I’ve drawn anything, and some of my characters could use a redesign or update. On the one hand, it feels kinda weird to gush about my own OCs. (What do you mean I can write about my own interests on my own posts?! 😱 Is that even allowed?) On the other hand, well, why not?

Anyway, not sure how much anyone’s interested in hearing about my characters, but at least it’s easy to block I guess. 🤷‍♀️

ia rambles about... fandom stuff ia personal I know other people talk about their OCs but they're allowed to not me tho I think I'll tag my oc rambles as 'imaginary people post'

I know I’ve been pretty quiet on here lately. Been busy, and I normally don’t comment on new game releases, especially not ones I haven’t played yet myself but … *head in hands, screaming*

I might delete this post later, but I’m mad right now, so I’m gonna vent.

Today was the release date for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, and it looks to be as bad as I feared it’d be.

I knew better than to drop as much money as they were asking for (basically $60 for the basic version, up to $90 for the “premium” edition) on an unproven game, especially not one that I was already iffy about, so at least I’m not kicking myself for that. Even if they hadn’t tried blocking some of the basic clans behind a paywall, after all the crap that went down with the previous version of the game, I knew I wasn’t going to buy it anytime soon.

That said, there are over 800 reviews on Steam as of this post, and it sounds like this is a VTM game in name only, and that’s being generous. Of course, I know first-day reviews aren’t necessarily reliable. The vitriol is probably at the highest point right now. Some things will inevitably be smoothed out and fixed. Even so, I don’t think it’ll make any real difference to me.

From what I’ve seen of the reviews so far, it’s basically a stealth(ish)-combat game with a linear story and an MC who has an already established background. Regardless of what gets fixed on the technical side, unless they’re going to do a total overhaul of the gameplay, it sounds like it’s not for me even in the best case scenario.

That suuuuuuuuuucks for me, because the first Bloodlines is one of my top, (problematic) favorite games. I haven’t written anything about it on here somehow, but it is one of my cyclically recurring hyperfixations, as some people who know me can attest.

I typically play rpgs for the story and role-playing aspect. Combat is almost always the part of a game I have to put up with to get to the stuff I actually care about. Stealth games aren’t really my favorite, but I do appreciate having multiple ways of dealing with situations – including sneaking around them. But from what it sounds like, this game’s stealth is in name only too.

So, let me get this right, here. They basically removed all customization (character appearance aside), there are no dialogue skill checks, no VTM skills, attributes, or talents to check even outside dialogue, limited disciplines, no inventory, no guns, barely any references to Clans, a Malk deuteragonist whose main point is to be Mr. Exposition and infodump (and not even cryptically) to the player, apparently no real references to the events of Bloodlines, a linear story with little reactivity to the very limited, rare player choices … am I understanding this correctly? Are they for real? How is this a VTM game, let alone a Bloodlines sequel?

Urgh. My expectations were already in the gutter, but somehow I’m still disappointed anyway.

I’ll probably still keep an eye on the thing and, in a few years when the price goes way down, I might try it out on a whim, but damn it all. Can’t we have anything nice, even just once in a while?

Love the fact that Durge refers to Bane as Bhaal's 'sworn foe.'

Like, yes, Bhaal has several enemies who have humiliated him and directly oppose him but his former adventuring partner - who he is still for some fucking reason willingly hanging out with and allows to restrain him from going on killing rampages when his divine nature overrides his sapience - is the one he's most specifically declared his nemesis.

Presumably for the Time of Troubles debacle. Bhaal takes betrayal badly and remains pissy about people hurting his minions, I guess.

playing as a cleric of lathander in bg3 is honestly really funny when you consider who your companions are

a cleric of shar (not for long in my play-throughs tho)

and

a vampire, an undead

i really wish larian put more thought into their dialogue options for the different clerics that aren’t just “i’ll pray to my god for them”, especially when shadowheart reveals her shar worship, like i highly doubt my cleric of lathander would be very happy about it, same with astarion revealing he’s a vampire though i did keep them both around because it’s funny to think about the implications of it (the excuse is helping them with their new beginnings)

also i was very sad abt the fact that they added rosymorn but then didn’t add little bits for clerics of lathander, like my guy was acting like he knew nothing about lathander it was pissing me off because THATS YOUR GOD. YOU ARE ONE OF HIS CLERICS. RESPECT THE MORNINGLORD.

anyways i got him the blood of lathander because it felt most fitting

yeah 😔 Lathanderites 🤝 Ilmatari “New brain. Who dis?” in your own god's temple They really didn't quite think through having cleric characters

I always love getting flavour text for the little things, like clerics praying for their spells and how it feels when your deity reaches out and implants themselves and their essence in you:

With another breath, she closed her eyes and prayed. As the words left her lips, tiny lashes began to sting Ythnel, indication that Loviatar was pouring out the Power to her. The stings flared into a wave of burning, a cleansing fire that scorched away all the aches and pains and soreness in its path.
- Maiden of Pain

Which then made me think about favoured souls/divine soul sorcerers, who have the Power/divine magic pre-existing in their own body/soul and presumably feel this every time they cast a spell. Fun for sorcerer Durge (and most Bhaalspawn who, as per Dragon Magazine, all have innate divine sorcery) who can canonically tell Gale their magic comes from their murderous divine nature, because that means this is what they should get every time they cast a spell by tapping into his essence in their veins:

Father claws into your heart and stops it for a single moment. As you begin to fear for your life, you know his love is close.

('Yeah, I get temporary heart failure/become clinicaly dead every time I cast fireball, don't panic.')

And now i want a nother Durge-Abdirak comparitive religion debate, since the Mercy of Loviatar kicks in after torturing somebody to the boundary of life and death and holding them there to experience holy pain (and gain tolerance to endure the neverending parade of pain that is living) while the Bhaalist ideal says holiness and peace lies on the other side of that boundary.

@infiniteanalemma
This makes me wonder what it must feel like for Ilmatari, since they're essentially foils to Loviatans. Ilmater takes others' pain, but his clergy is supposed to endure suffering for others. Does he take his clergy's pain too, or would that negate their sacrifice? What happens if the cleric isn't currently in pain or is doing magic for something other than healing someone else's pain? Do they suffer first regardless and then feel relief/catharsis when it's taken away? 🤔

Considering Ilmater's most holy relic requires pain and sacrifice to use, prayers to Ilmater involve asking him to experience your pain with you to make it easier to bear, and the experiences of the Twice-Martyred, who can endure immense suffering - with no relief but they receive blessings that bolster their morale and allow them to commune with Ilmater and function through any suffering on a superhuman level, I feel like both experience pain while they experience the nearness of their gods, personally. The difference being that Loviatar will turn it into pleasure but enjoying pain is a sin to Ilmater, who bears it with you instead of inflicting it upon yu for sadistic purposes. Pain fades/stops bothering for both, post-prayer. Arguably, you're asking to share his pain/burdens here by borrowing his power to go out and do his work.

You don't need to be in pain to pray for your daily spells necessarily, the actual experience of the deity's essence will hurt anyway. Although Loviatans do prefer to flagellate before (afterwards if they can not) and Ilmatari are debatable.

Also, for Ilmater the pain will likely feel like being tortured on a rack rather than being whipped, considering the holy symbols and associations (and praying to Ilmater involves invoking the rack while Loviatan prayer, the whip).

makes sense puts an interesting spin on things if you think about borrowing Ilmater's power as sharing and relieving him of some of his own suffering bg3 baldur's gate 3 fandom stuff dnd lore clerics
