how my commentary/analysis tags work
-i live-comment as i experience media, so it’s typically on my blog in the form of very long reblog chains, created over the course of typically an hour or two depending on how distracted i am, how much i have to say, how often i pause the media to comment, etc. this will easily clog up your dash.
-all liveblogging/commentary posts on audiovisual media will be tagged #toast watches. everything will also be tagged #toast watches [name of media].
-if you want to see NONE of my commentary, block #toast watches, #toast plays, #toast studies
-if you want to see my commentary but not every instance of those long reblog chains, search my blog for #analysis, #toasty talks, and/or #[name of media]. each one of those tags also includes other posts tho so just be warned lmao

Okay normally I'm on the side of "words mean whatever we need them to mean".

but guys, I don’t like the suggestion that it’s what is happening here. Being unfamiliar with the term, and guessing its meaning based on vibes, doesn’t mean you have equal authority on whether it’s “correct” with the community who actively use this word in a technical sense.

please do consider that if you haven't been exposed to the word in the context it's used in, "both are correct" and "you can interpret it differently" and “there is no right or wrong answer” and “it feels like it SHOULD be X” cannot be a fully realised take. Sure, linguistics recognises there are rules in which meaning changes - but “laypeople being unfamiliar with the word, and liking vibes better” isn’t one of them.

You can do that with most words, especially slang, and shape them to the needs of the majority, but this isn't like... a fanfiction word, invented for fanfic and, like, solely used for injured hockey players where it doesn’t matter if the injured limb swaps sides 4 times in a sex scene and phases through a stomach. It is, in its context, a bit more load-bearing (ha) than that.

It's fine to be unfamiliar with the context, and it's fine for words to change, but do just take a quick second to hear it in a native sentence!

One of the most common ways of using this word is to assess four-legged animals. "Favouring" is a specific grouping of behaviour - a hesitancy in gait, stiffness, reluctance to put weight on a limb. It’s often inconsistent, as the animal tries to compensate or conceal the pain. It may not be a full limp or obvious lameness, since prey animals especially will actively try to conceal this; favouring is a subtle reluctance, and a useful word for a very specific recognisable behaviour that the animal is usually trying to lie about. (That’s probably why it’s used in romance fiction, as it’s an interestingly romantic and stoic way to react to pain, and doesn’t mean the limb is inconveniently disabled. A fictional character favouring a wounded leg can wince attractively when it’s jostled, but it doesn’t matter too much if the author forgets and has them run to the door suddenly - “favouring” isn’t incompatible with “running” in horses either.)

The sentence “Favouring the off hind” is equestrian jargon: it means “pain behaviour on the back right leg.” It does not mean “opposite-pain in the not-on deer” and is not confusing in its professional register.

If you've only vaguely heard of "myeloma", and most people in a poll are guessing it's a skin cancer, that doesn't mean that myeloma and melanoma can now readily collapse into the same word - they're under active use in their native contexts, where the people frequently using them do need to communicate the difference between skin and blood cancer.

A poll of laypeople misunderstanding “myeloma,” or non-horse-people misunderstanding “favouring,” isn’t quite enough to indicate a full semantic shift and change of meaning of the term. The community that uses the term “favouring” in the context of “limb injury” - vets, farriers, farmers, commentators, equestrians - knows what it means and uses it consistently in the same way. They’re not confused. because to them, it isn’t a vibesy, sex-scene-hand waving word. It’s a cluster of pain signals.

If you aren’t familiar with that usage, then that’s really more about your own lack of familiarity. Not all interpretations DO carry equal authority, especially when one is just confusion/unfamiliarity. You just haven’t met it before, and that’s fine.

Tl;dr: I’m all for words changing meanings, but we shouldn’t be too quick to declare that when it’s based entirely on unfamiliarity and vibes-based readings.

favoring is giving special treatment to. so if you favor your left leg you are not using it as heavily thus the left is injured. i favor my right since i have a knee injury on my right side. so i step more heavily on the left linguistics super interesting to hear it's like. Very Specifically a horse term makes sense but i didn't know

vent toasty talks queer the problem is that any of my labels are too complicated to just drop on the table. and the way i present doesn't simplify easily can't say i'm lesbian bc partner is a man. and im aroace. but can't say i will never get married/have devoted relationship bc i'm in a relationship that could be perceived as romantic even tho it's not. can't say i'm just they/them nonbinary bc i use all pronouns but if i say that i will never be correctly gendered or respected also the timing is awful bc i'm in college and have a bunch of gay friends and even tho ive had the language to describe my experience for YEARS now it will still look like college turned me gay and anything i say will seem disingenuous. and yes all these arguments are things i will actually face and have before and im just so tired of this being the gay cousin (in fact the Only queer person at Any family function. the only even vaguely gnc person. the only one who even like?? is normal about pronouns??) is so lonely and i didn't even know people had like accepting and chill families esp bc my whole family is religious which would be fine if they were also not homophobic. apparently that is a thing. for some people whatever. i'll figure it out. i'm just so tired of being closeted and have no idea what to say to kick down the door !!!!!! does this make sense. idc

So writing a Strange noises fanfic at the moment (as you know lol)... and I had some thoughts about Clarissa for it.

First of all, she's been on the Silver line longer than any other kid. She knows every other kid and she has seen them all going as well. Main reason for this is the angst potential but also the way she acts so fimiliar with Loco. Also she said it's been years.

Now my main point is this.

She knows everyone's name. She knew the name of each kid that came when they didn't, she knew Benjamin's name when he didn't. She got to know every kid that comes, and for some reason when no one did, she knew their names. Loco doesn't know that she does, but she just knows. She doesn't know why, she can't tell them their name either, but she just knows. It's not even guessing, cause she's always right. She even knew her own name, which she said in the video. ("It's been so long, I think it was... Clarissa?" or something, but she said her own name when no one else remembered.)

One more thing that i write about as well, she writes down every name as well, so when she would be gone, someone can find it and remember those who're gone. She writes down their name and what they turned into.
