okay so i have a reblog in my drafts about this because i do not think i can articulate it super clearly? but like. yes obviously dont use they/them for those characters either. but i am!! talking about the specific situation of using ‘male’ as the default, which is something you mention in your tags!
people, i think, tend to use they in place of it in a similar, but distinctly different way than theyll use he instead. its the 'dehumanization’ angle that makes people default to they, even if the character repeatedly expresses that it is an it. its a bias about what a pronoun means.
using he instead is similar, but with an added layer of misogyny on top. a person cant be an 'it’, so it has to be the 'default’. which ends up being man to a lot of people.
so like. incorrect pronoun use is always an issue. youre lucky if a nonbinary character will get gendered correctly at all. even with multiple pronoun sets, which is another thing you mention, people might just… only use he or she. and they might think that using they is a good thing! because why would people want to be an it! its all degendering, but something something. internalized misogyny is rampant in online culture and the applying of something 'binary’ to something outside of that bothers me on a very deep level.
