A variant of the "Betsy Ross flag"--several depictions of it in paintings of the 1770s and 1780s show the stars in a tighter formation than seen here. It was never an official flag of the early nation, but were likely popular, though other 13-star flags representing the new United States were also popular at the time, such as the Cowpens flag. The June 14, 1777 Flag Resolution of the Second Continental Congress did not require a particular arrangement for the 13 stars.
