I relate this to a… WORRYING degree.
Morgan Freeman had his first breakout roles in his 50s. Leonard Cohen debuted at 33. Toni Morrison published her first novel at 39. Vera Wang entered fashion design at 40. Penelope Fitzgerald published her first novel at 58. Louise Gluck won her Nobel prize at age 77. Edward Said wrote Orientalism at age 42. Charles Bradley debuted with his first album at 62. Those people are literal legends, and no one would think they arrived late. They just arrived when they were ready. You have time to do the thing. You have time to hone your craft on the thing and create something you are truly proud of. You have time
Any time the thought "Ea Nasir jokes are kind of overdone" crosses my mind I have to remember: The fact that we even know about this one guy who lived thousands of years ago to the point where we can continually dog on him for his bad copper is so fucking crazy. Like imagine if the only surviving trace of a small diner 5000 years later was an archived Yelp review saying their hashbrowns are always overdone, and that anyone on earth only knows that "Ethel's Place" existed because they would give people sub-par potato dishes.
So I'm an archivist and a few days ago I got an email from a 15-year-old girl wanting to know if I've got any material on the only still-existing old mill in town (you've got to imagine this mill not like a quaint, stereotypical windmill the likes of which Don Quixote fought against but rather like an industrialisation-era factory).
I wrote back and asked if she needed this for a school project or for something else where there's a deadline looming, for the simple reason that the more time I have, the more in-depth I can go with my research and the more material I'll be able to get for her.
And she answered that no, it's for her personal use because she's interested in abandoned buildings in general.
And, like. What an absolutely excellent hobby for a teenage girl to have. I bet she's the coolest person in her class and I hope that no one ever gives her a hard time about her interests.
the fact that generative A.I. has created a completely new fundamental doubt in reality (checking to see if an artwork we see is manmade or not) and doubt in the instinct of enjoying art is unforgivable. its sickeningly tragic, and i mean it. NOTHING is worth this price and i hope that everyone will one day realize this.
fanfiction is a rare gem and a solid, living proof that, in a world of tiktok, influencers and content posting, not everything is about money and going viral. art can still be art just for the sake of the artists’ pure love, joy and passion for the art they create. fanfic writers write 100k words and more about the characters they love for free. just because they love these characters and the art of writing so much. art is not dead and the world is still beautiful.
shoutout to fanfiction and fanfic writers
Thank you to all the authors who give me such wonderful treasures I can not take to all the therapy I'm avoiding.
as an archivist I am begging you
- put dates on everything
- don’t believe digital stuff is preserved forever - if it’s really important (documents, photos, etc) print it out
- name your files accurately I know it sucks but please
- don’t destroy the original just bc you scanned it
- rubber cement is the devil’s adhesive use photo corners and quit gluing shit
- you will NOT remember write it down
- if you staple things to the inside of a folder I will find you
- your public library probably has equipment to digitize old media for free or can at least get you connected with somewhere that does!
seeing straight men be disgusted by booktok smut recommenders has actually radicalized me to the side of booktok smut recommenders. girls your taste may be atrocious but i will never disparage you for exposing mainstream discourse to the concept of soaking through your underwear. spent my whole life listening to men talk about penises it’s about time they get jumpscared by women talking about pussy in crude detail on social media. go forth and goon my warriors
I work at a bookstore and hearing one of my male coworkers call smutty romantasy "the downfall of society" because it's "literally just porn" radicalized me
Men have an entire industry. Entire industries dedicated to their sexualities. Let women have fantasy sex. there's not even a camera crew involved.
Left this in the notes
Not what I’d imagined using this blog for but this is important to me so whatever.
Just finished Dune by Frank Herbert. I have the strange sense that it was simultaneously boring and so deeply interesting. I think what bothers me the most is that the narrative feels unfinished. I know that the story will continue in other books but the end felt sort of anticlimactic and there’s a number of themes that need to be more fleshed out. Nevertheless I quite enjoyed it. I will be reading the second book, Dune Messiah, at some point but there are many other books to read before that.
