I also think it’s part of this trend of people who don’t like AI not thinking critically about anti-AI rhetoric
Okay!! Let’s think critically then.
I am genuinely sick of people saying AI art isn’t art.
It’s not, tho
I thought we had moved past trying to define things we don’t like out of being art. Art isn’t inherently good! Plenty of human artists make slop!
I think you’re fundamentally misunderstanding (at best - at worst you’re intentionally misconstruing) the point.
AI art is not art, and that is not because it doesn’t look good. It’s because it isn’t deliberate. Art is, fundamentally, a skill.
For example. Let’s take a look at vocaloids.
The way vocaloid (and similar, such as UTAU) software works is that there is a voice bank for a character. The composer independently places the syllables from the voice bank in order, pitch, tempo, and separation needed for the song. It’s effectively a synth board for a character voice. (Even VSynth, which has AI implementation, doesn’t use it for decision-making, but instead to tween moras, making it sound more natural. The AI is not fundamental, but supplemental in this regard)
Vocaloid music is deliberate. It is a skill.
Whenever this topic crops up, there’s always someone talking about photographs. But, photography is still deliberate. You hunt for the scene, you line it up, you frame it, and you take your shot.
Artistic photography isn’t a luck of the draw “I saw something so I snapped a quick photo,” it is a deliberate effort. It is a skill, and one you can improve at.
Compare this to how AI image generation is done.
You put a couple nouns and a slew of adjectives into a word processor, and it makes an image based on the average of images in its query with similar descriptions.
It is not deliberate. It is a semirandom algorithmic average.
You cannot direct the line or the colors. You can’t hunt for them. It is fundamentally not a skill, as you can’t do anything to improve upon it. The only hopes for improvement are system updates.
Anything is fair game if it targets the thing I don’t like.
This isn’t about “thing I don’t like,” this is about the fact that the plagiarism machine (and it is plagiarism in the way that claiming a tracing is an original) is being passed off as a tortured artist.
Like how that transfem you’re vaguely uncomfortable with is a pedophile.
This isn’t even comparable to the systemic societal oppression of trans women.
And I am too for making that comparison.
Holy self-victimising
