Not “The Character did nothing wrong” or “The Character is irredeemably awful” but a secret third thing: The Character may display moments of deep love & compassion, may even have a strong sense of ethics, and may also be capable of brutal cruelty that is irreconcilable with those traits. The constant tension between the different sides of The Character’s nature is exactly what makes them compelling, and attempting to reduce them down to simply “a terrible person” or “innocent & misunderstood” is missing the point of the questions a media with nuanced characters is asking you to consider

Each Benoit Blanc film takes place in a different season and classic murder mystery setting.

Knives Out: Autumn in a country house

Glass Onion: Summer on a private island

Wake up Dead Man: Spring in a small town

So the next film in the cycle needs to be set in winter on a mode of transportation.

It still drives me crazy that this was written in 2014

yeah i’m just gonna add the quotes that really struck me:

It’s telling that the latest two more relevant articles I’ve read about digital impact on our lives are not even from last year. Besides the one from 2014, linked above in the reblog, consider also this one from March 2023, that hits pretty hard today. It comes to show that since its public launch, the AI propaganda included a quote of doomerism as part of their selling arguments. “It’s scary how fast you’ll be obsolete, so you better jump on, or be left behind!”

Don’t fall for the “everything is changing so fast” narrative so easily. Indeed, the more patiently we look, the more online culture seems to have stalled in everything but its most superficial aspects. But if you listen very closely, you’ll hear a single thing breaking the silence, this sort of weird, anxious breathing. It comes from the investors and con men who wait for an unprecedented, infinite reward for hyping such a big piece of nothing all this time.

“Don’t say your character growled, he isn’t an animal!” okay but have you considered that i am intentionally drawing that parallel for a reason. he is dangerous, he is feral, he is ready to attack like a dog or a jungle beast. words have these things called connotations that allow them to carry layers and layers of meaning that would otherwise take sentences to convey–sentences that wouldn’t do it as well as “he growled.” i say this as an english major and as someone who has been writing for over ten years: “growled” is a valid word choice when you want your readers to know that your character fucking growled.

Shout out to characters who want to be used. Shout out to characters who are so desperate to be worth something that they’ll endure anything. Shout out to characters who build their entire self worth around being useful, being a tool. Shout out to characters who don’t care how they are treated, as long as someone pays them any attention at all
