and so onALT

quite adore The Atom’s Special Emanata employed to highlight him when he might otherwise be too small to notice

panel of jonathan crane brandishing a gun in his classroom as he says "now you see what the gun can do! it can destroy! before-- you only guessed what it could do. now that you have seen its destructive power-- you are even more afraid! simple psychology, gentlemen--" meanwhile, a student gawps in shock and dismay in the foreground.ALT

now surely his villain origin story is that he got super mega fired for doing this.

looking at various owlman and power ring image search results, and it’s kinda interesting that the former’s designs get better while the latter’s actually get less appealing to me. i mean, the first part isn’t surprising because. there is nowhere to go but up.

collage of owlman images. a full body image of him showing that he looks like silver age blue batman but with an orangish brown owl cowl that doesn't even cover his face. a closeup image of his face where his cowl covers his eyes but its own big stupid eyes are higher than where his real eyes would be. (this one is labeled "i hate him.") and a more modern take on owlman that is completely gray and black and has a cowl like batman's but just sculpted to look more like owl tufts and with round lenses over his eyes.ALT

taking batman’s extremely bat-based costume and just removing the logo and swapping out the cowl with a googly-eyed helm that doesn’t match the color palette of the rest of his design at all even a little bit vs. a clear concept of “what if you made batman more owl-shaped” but, like, cohesively. cohesively.

but then these later power rings i am seeing are watered down wrt what i like about the original design.

a power ring collage. a flying power ring whose costume is primarily black with some green highlights on it. another power ring with lighting that shows more green highlights but is still mainly black. a power ring that is completely green where his costume used to be black, and any black is just shading. another power ring who is also very green, a paler hue due to the green energy glow around him, and his formerly X-shaped logo is larger at the top.ALT

the mask is more sensible because of a “mirrored rhombuses” shape that keeps the harsh angles while also giving his eyes space to actually exist on his face.

but the rest is a duller kind of dulling… the receding of the black from the palette so that it goes from sleek, super dark green to painfully monochrome with even less black than regular green lantern’s costume…

and i didn’t show it much in the above images, but even the logo tends to get rounded to a sort of butterfly or even clover shape? which, not that i’m big attached to the original logo, it’s pretty generic, but making it so squishy is a strange choice for “evil bad guy version of hero character”

doodle of two otherwise identical power rings with different palettes and logos. the left one has the shiny black costume and X logo and is labeled "edgy. almost like he's a villain or something." the other one is green and bright and plain and has a clover-shaped logo and is labeled "st. patrick's day mascot???"ALT

at least john stewart’s power ring looks pretty cromulent…

two john stewart power rings. both have costumes that use primarily black with an angular swath of green at the top and the X-shaped logo.ALT
drawing of owlman and power ring from the crime syndicate of america. owlman has his face resting on his hand in an extremely smug way. power ring stands behind him with a tiny face.ALT

oh my god, i finally found this. thank you korean clip studio forum post that i’m only 80% sure depicts this because the auto-translate doesn’t apply to screenshots but helped me get here anyway.

MS paint doodle of supergirl using her heat visionALT

i like reading scans with the original ads and bonus bits because it’s fun for immersion in the historical context, but it is also dangerous because their cross-promotion of simultaneous and “upcoming” comics works on me too often.

these old comics sure love the word “spurt”

a previous iteration of my supey wiki had two pages titled “Superhero Comics Are Bad, Actually” and “Superhero Comics Are Good, Actually” where i would put screenshots of stuff i came across. e.g.:
