REASONS WHY STARFIRE IS A BETTER LOVE INTEREST TO DICK THAN BABS
DickKory:
“+Starfire was the first true romance of Dick Grayson that actually evolved into something. A great part of Dick’s real love life started with the Teen Titans, not in Batman or Detective Comics
+Starfire will always love Dick because her race can only love once in their lives.
+Dick and Kori have mutual respect, both as people and as heroes.
+Starfire was ok with most of Dick’s plans, even those “Batman-esque” that usually makes him look a lot like his foster father.
+In an alternative world, they have the cutest daughter of the world.
+She was a really good and caring girlfriend.-Retcons destroy something about this relationship to defend Dickbabs once a year or so. They make him cheat on her, etc.
+They have an extremely loving relationship (even when they’re not romantically involved)
+Kory played one of the biggest parts (if not thebiggest) in allowing Dick to forge his own path (and become Nightwing)
+She opened him up emotionally to stop him becoming a Batman 2.0. If I’m being really nitpicky about it, Dick/Babs wouldn’t have worked without Kory’s emotional influence with Dick (I wrote a reddit comment about it here - Dick was way too emotionally immature until he met Kory)
+Kory is the ultimate contrast to Bruce (and ultimately, Dick’s partner needs to be that contrast). She’s emotionally open and honest, happy, affectionate and refuses to hide herself away. Yes it sounds like that clichéd “Kory is the light to his darkness” but at the end of the day, the reason why Babs and Dick had problems was because they were too similar to each other and ended up pushing one another away too much
+They trust each other immensely (Dick literally told her everything in his dreams about Raven)
+Kory has an extremely strong connection with him and actually understands the way he is
+They have a cute daughter in Kingdom Come - Mar'i Grayson (hero name Nightstar)
+Kory's the number one wingnut (wingnuts are the names used for fans of Nightwing)
+They had a very memorable start to their relationship (they had their first kiss before they even had a conversation)
+He was actually supposed to get married to her, and the only reason he didn’t was because the writer on that project decided to do another project instead. (And therefore DC needed to retcon the hell out of that relationship)
+Dick and Kory give each other signed photos of one another (no clue why, but it’s very entertaining) as gifts
+Contrary to retcons, Dick truly did love Kory
I honestly hated What was done to DickKory relationship honestly, it was depicted all along as of love and commitment later retconned into Kory being the ‘needy’ one . They were both fine with each other but writers are like sometimes possessed by demons That they destroy everything what’s fine. yikes! Really stupid and unfortunate it almost ruined Kory’s characterization . It also messed up Dick’s characterization as dog around town but I suppose that was to build him up to the fanboys with Kory he was a one woman man and totally devoted . the fact that writers have to retcon so much of that away to push up DickBabs just shows how important DickKory was. Post-Flashpoint has been a bit of a mess with the Dickfire relationship since Seeley only mentions Dickfire when he needs a comparison (e.g. Dick and Kori had a pregnancy scare when they were seventeen - their relationship happened when Dick was around 16 - 18 ish I think, whereas pre-flashpoint had them getting together when Dick was in college). Also according to Seeley, Shawn is ‘the most emotionally honest woman’ (or something to that effect) Dick’s ever met, which shows that Seeley has no clue what Dickfire’s like.
DickBabs:
-It’s a platonic romance.
-They don’t really have enough history to back up their relationship.
-Many writers usually use this romance, because its easy to tie down Dick to the Batside than Kori.
- Dick/Babs just feels like it’s brother and sister.
- Babs constantly rejects dick for no reason. she was also very domineering. She would constantly put his heart on an emotional roller coaster during the hardest time in his life. He was pushing himself too hard and having to deal with Blockbuster and all she does is snap at him and act like a bitch. She gets attacked by Tarantula and Dick tries to protect her. He’s not on his game because again, he’s been pushing himself well beyond his limits, and gets in the way with Tarantula stealing a kiss if I remember right and she flips on him about that even though he was shocked she even kneed him between his legs. She even flat out accuses him of always talking about the old days of Batgirl and that he was in love with who she used to be not with who she was and breaks up with him at a carnival. It is not within Dick to be anywhere close to that cold hearted or uncaring but also, what else is there for them to talk about? “Oh hey babs? What’d you do today? Helped out Canary with a case? Worked out?” I mean she technically does the same thing every day and there wasn’t much in the present that they could connect with. What it seems to me is that Barbara has this mold that she wants Dick to fit into but that he can’t stray from it at all. However Dick’s personality and character will never allow him to fit the mold she wants him in and the idea she has for how he should be. .
- Barbara does carry around a lot of emotional baggage and she is defensive with her feelings. But, Dick has gotten through that shell and could help heal her. Yes, they have history when they were kids and she may anchor him back to Gotham and Batman. But, I think, with how much he roams around, Dick needs a stable base.
-Babs is a hella angrier woman now. A lot. She usually ditch, makes fun or insult Dick since New-52. Seeley barely fixed it in Rebirth.
-She tried to sleep with Jason Todd, coincidentally, a couple of days after that Dick had to cancel a date because he was going black ops in a mission.
-She has said that she didn’t want Dick in her personal life again.
- They’ve never ever been together since from the beginning with their “will they “ “will they not” back and forth type of relationship dynamic.
Tbh Babs and Dick didn’t have a stronger bond. Most of their bond was retconned on the idea that ‘Dick loved Babs more than Kory so therefore his bond with Babs is stronger’. Babs definitely is an important love interest of Dick’s but their relationship was fraught with her insecurity and worry that by dating Dick she’d lose her independence. Babs pushed Dick away many times and although he came back to her again and again she never got over that fear. Dick and Kory had their issues, too, but most of them were resolved; Dick and Babs had a constant cycle of Babs wanting to get closer to Dick, getting close to him, pushing him away, feeling bad, and so on. Seriously, if DC wants Dick and Babs to be in a relationship, no matter how boring I may personally find it, good for them. My issue has to do with DC trashing one of the best written long term relationships in the DC universe in favor of a completely retconned one, which makes absolutely no sense (unless you’ve been in a Batcave for years.). To capture my interest in a Nightwing/Batgirl relationship, show me the process of them falling in love instead of telling me “oh, look how much they love each other,” out of the clear blue with no real history to back this up. I think that was the deathblow for many potential BG/NW shippers - the “Dick sleeps with Babs and then hands her an invite to his wedding to Kory” scene. Especially when anyone reading the Titans books knows that before the wedding, Dick was trying to do everything he could to try to get Kory to marry him. The fact that he might lose her was driving him NUTS! He didn’t have one eye on Babs waiting for any chance to shag the commissioners daughter. -In the Batman Family comics, Dick actually did work with Babs in the 80’s when he was also in the Titans. She worked with him on the Jason Todd origin story. Quite closely. And never did he once seem to be in love with Batgirl. BG and Robin have been in the same book since 1966 and have come nowhere near a relationship. Dick and Kory, on the other hand, were in a serious relationship (with serious issues, of course) from 1980 - 1993 (100th Issue was “the wedding”). To call this, as some have, a hook-up tells me that those who have judged this relationship haven’t read the book. At one point in the story, Dick Grayson told Kory that he was a ONE WOMAN MAN, and so a portion of the problem seems to be how the character of Dick Grayson has changed.
so yeah that’s it . DickKory’s beautiful relationship and storyline shows that they’re really good for each other and meant to be together. Their relationship is more simple and straightforward. They have such a meaningful relationship that makes much more sense for both parties and They have this feeling of escapism from both of them when they’re with each other. Dick feels miles away from gotham and batman when he’s with Kori and Kori feels miles away from the abuse that she suffered as a child. No other woman is right for dick grayson except Kory. With starfire he is his own man, his own city, his own identity , his own life, his relationship with starfire is ultimately what gave him the independence from batman and made him his own character. They have a lot of strong romantic history, bond and chemistry to back them up than any other relationship of Dick Grayson. They’re clearly an endgame relationship goal. DickKory is undeniably better than Dickbabs. DC doesn’t need to trash it.”

She stutters and gulps, avoiding his gaze. She is trapped between the wall and his body with his hands on either side of her locking her into place. “Look at me,” he growls. She looks up. The inferno in his brown eyes is unmistakable. His long waves of hair cascading down frame the red tint blooming under the tan skin on his face. “Tell me you don’t feel anything for me anymore. Tell me you don’t love me anymore.”
She looks up, blinking back tears.
“I—”
“You what Kory? Say it!”

Dick sighed heavily, his eyes glancing back down at his watch for the third time in the past minute. The dying embers in the fireplace were still glowing softly, casting a warm hue of orange over the sitting room. He adjusted his tie, paced around the table, readjusted his tie again before checking his watch again.
“You know,” Donna said as she sat down in one of the arm chairs, a glass of champagne held loftily in her hand, “constantly checking your watch isn’t going to make everyone get ready faster.”
Dick smiled, a soft, little pull of his lips as he took in the sight of his best friend. Sometimes he could hardly believe she was really back. It felt like he had slipped into a dream where everything was finally starting to go right. He was afraid he was going to wake up and everyone was going to be gone. That he would be left alone to be swallowed by Gotham where he would never, ever get out. He was still trying to process it all. Losing Hank, saying goodbye to Jason, getting Rachel and Donna back. Their little family had been through so much and Dick felt like he had been on the edge for so long that the idea of finally going home made it feel like he could breathe again.
“We’re going to be late,” came his diplomatic reply as he forced himself not to look down at the watch again.
“So what,” Donna asked with a raised eyebrow as she took a drink from her glass, “this is our goodbye party, we can show up when we want.”
“Bruce—” Dick began.
“Bruce owes the Titans a million goodbye parties to make up for the hell he put you all through,” Donna replied as she stood up, her face growing hard.

Note: I can’t believe there aren’t 1000 fics for the Titans version of Dickkory yet (the show doesn’t even seem to have it’s own category on Ao3 at the moment), so I did a thing. My version of how things might play out in the next episode, from Dick’s POV. I will maybe write more and longer Dickkory fics in the future when I finish my two Westallen wips. Also, although I would have loved to have gotten super smutty here, I still maintain that I’m not that good at it, so enjoy some moderate sensuality instead. When she kissed him the first time, he had no deep and meaningful reason for kissing her back. He did it because her eyes were impossibly green and her legs were impossibly long, and because far too much time had passed since he’d truly, intimately touched another person for reasons other than violence.
His hands were clenched into fists even then, even as she stood close enough to shield him from the constant threat all around them, and folded her strong hands around the back of his neck. She was soft, and warmer than anyone he’d ever felt, inhumanly warm, a fever of a woman. Maybe he could forget the anger inside for as long as she cradled him in her summery embrace. At some point he uncurled his fingers, reminding himself that everything was still and quiet for now, and he touched her instead.
Dick lifts up her shirt carefully, trying not to think about the blood soaking it. Dick’s never had a problem with blood. It’s been a constant in his life. So seeing the blood on her shirt now shouldn’t faze him. But it does. Because it’s her blood.
It’s just wrong. And it’s not really even that she’s hurt. Although that’s wrong. Very very wrong. It’s that she’s not used to bleeding like this. Her skin should be healing quickly, but it’s not. He’s not used to seeing her bleed. He thinks back, and doesn’t think he’s ever seen her bleed before.
It’s wrong. She should be indestructible. Unable to be physically hurt.
