Tbh I think a lot of the "former gifted kid" stuff is that sometimes people who are intelligent and intellectually inclined get taken out by a mental health crisis at a pivotal moment and shunted onto a worse path. And sometimes they get weird about it, as people often do about their misfortunes. Yes, they should have a better attitude. But there's no real need to be vicious, just let it pass you by.

Tetradrachm of Syracuse, minted 484/3 BCE, not long after the city had been conquered by the aggressive, expansionist tyrant Gelon. On the obverse, a charioteer driving a four-horse chariot, with Nike flying above. This design may reflect the eagerness of Gelon and other members of the Deinomenid dynasty to win glory at Panhellenic athletic contests (Gelon's brother and successor Hieron was the addressee of several victory odes by Pindar). On the reverse, the diademed head of the nymph Arethusa, with four dolphins swimming around her. A popular Sicilian myth held that Arethusa, fleeing the river-god Alpheus, flowed into the Mediterranean and re-emerged from underground at Syracuse as a spring of fresh water.
