I’ve actually been online since slightly before Internet access was made available to the general public; my elementary school was part of one of the first pilot programs to extend educational access beyond university campuses. That would have been… around 1991 or 1992, I want to say? In any case, I’ve been inflicting my bad opinions on people for roughly 35 years, and I’m not planning on stopping any time soon!

(I don’t remember exact dates, but I know I got online right around the same time that the rec.games.frp.dnd Usenet group was created, and that was apparently May of 1992 according to the FAQ, so slightly before that. If you were also on Usenet around that time and found yourself reading especially bad game design posts thinking to yourself “this guy writes like he’s eight years old”, there’s a non-zero chance you were right.)

I feel I should emphasise that this is not in any way aspirational. You think being an unsupervised preteen with access to Twitter will fuck a kid up? I was exactly the right age at exactly the right time to have been an unsupervised preteen on dial-up BBSes, Usenet, IRC, and first-generation web forums, more or less in that order. It’s actually kind of striking how rapidly the ads on ostensibly respectable platforms have changed in the last 12–18 months. I’ve been getting penis enlargement scams and pyramid schemes that don’t even bother to pretend to be otherwise on YouTube – it’s like every platform is now running the kinds of ads that even three years ago would have been restricted to porn sites, and I’m not gonna lie, the fact that everyone seems to be getting desperate all at once ain’t an encouraging sign!
