Elizabeth Taylor photographed by Mark Shaw for LIFE magazine at the Beverly Hills Hotel wearing her Oscars finery on April 16th, 1961. Elizabeth wore a Christian Dior gown called “Soiree a Rio” from Dior’s Spring-Summer 1961 Haute Couture collection to collect the Best Actress Academy Award she won for her performance in BUtterfield 8 at the ceremony. For unknown reasons, the beautiful photos Shaw took of Elizabeth wearing the gown weren’t published by LIFE at the time, not appearing in print until many years later.
