Howdy hey, it's ya boi

Okay, but like... Can we talk about how sad Flash Sentry is by the end of Equestria Girls? From, like, a meta perspective and a bit of an in-universe one too. Yeah, he was uselessly put into the show as a love interest for Princess Twilight, and I was with the general consensus of "Who asked for you, guy?" Mind, I had less animosity for him as he was part of what made the biggest running gag that I and a friend of mine made during our watch of EG. Even still, I realized near the end of our watch that Flash was just kinda of no consequence in universe as much as out.

His last chance to interact with Twilight for the most part, Rainbow Rocks, was spent being overly competitive and fully dickish to her (albeit under the sirens' spell) before Princess Twilight pretty much stopped coming to the human world altogether, with the exception of that one after-credit scene in Friendship Games. He meets SciTwi, but it's not his Twilight and she just kind of awkwardly avoids talking to him at first cuz, you know, she doesn't know him. Then in Legend of Everfree, SciTwi starts quickly getting interested in another boy (a much worse love interest imo) and Flash kind of just stews in that. The girl he likes is doing important stuff in another world and he'll likely never see her again outside of very scarce visits, and a girl that looks just like her that he does see every day is dating someone else.

He reconciles with Sunset and they agree to be friends again, which is nice, but he just kind of fades off into the background almost entirely. When you do see him again, he tries his best to help the girls where possible, even remarking once that he's wanted to be a part of their adventures sometime, which just makes me feel for the guy after he's become practically two steps away from full background character status at this point.

Buggy bedtime 🐞

I actually love this idea for an AU. It's a nice change of pace from the dozens of invasive Yuri thoughts (though I enjoy that too). I can imagine it as Cadance having to be tested just like Twilight, but in her case, Cadance has to raise a Changeling before Changelings were ever known to be capable of change. Not only that, but the future queen of Changelings!

Princess Cadance and Shining Armor might certainly have their doubts, but if Celestia thinks it's possible, they can't just say no. Besides, they were hoping to have a child some day anyways and this would be good practice, right? If they can successfully raise a Changeling, then surely they can raise a normal pony! (Hah! A normal pony? Oh those sweet summer horses)

Anyhoodle, Chrysalis would start off as a huge pain and would definitely continue to be a pain here and there, but she'd have her moments. Perhaps something of an instinctual brat that can't control her hunger at first and Shining and Cadance have to work on reining it in somehow. She's younger than Thorax, so it would probably take her longer to get to the point of being able to no longer feel starved without draining love.

I can imagine a few episode ideas following her childhood and the struggles of raising her. First and foremost is the family getting used to each other, complete with Chrysalis giving into instinct and trying to drain someone, which immediately gets her a scolding, maybe another punishment of some kind. Possibly make the lesson about finding ways to truly teach a child right from wrong and about consequences, because sometimes parents don't realize that punishment without understanding can lead to worse things.

There can be an episode about bullying, as I can imagine Chrysalis wouldn't be the sort to be nice to others her age at first. We can establish a friend for her, either it is someone she apologizes to for picking on, or she can be a bully for a while, gain a rival and later friend as a result of her faults early on. Another part of this idea would be her slowly coming to learn ways to get what she wants out of adults, like children tend to do once they start learning at an early age.

A big episode for Kid Chrysalis could involve her feeling upset and uncomfortable from starvation because she hasn't been allowed to feed off anyone. By now, Cadance could have become attached to her and want to help her, so offers a bit of her own love to help ease the pain, not wanting Chrysalis to ruin her own progress by feeding off others. This can culminate into Chrysalis slowly driving Cadance into a sluggish wreck over the course of the episode. Heck, this could even be a thing with her development in general, since knowledge about Changelings wasn't all that great in the beginning, so for all they know, Changelings could genuinely need to feed like that. Either way, the feeding starts to take its toll on Princess Cadance, and Chrysalis notices it more than anyone else. At first she denies it, scared of starving herself all over again as well as reasoning that "the Princess of Love should have tons of love, right? Like, infinity plus one!"

Maybe Cadance becomes bedridden and needs rest, leaving Shining Armor to dote on her and nurse her back to health for a while, whilst Cadance's duties get handed off to someone else for a bit, one of the other princesses most likely. When Shining Armor leaves the room to fetch her some soup, Chrysalis sneaks in to see her and seeing Cadance buried under blankets and barely able to move finally breaks it all down for her. Cadance spots Chrysalis and greets her sweetly, asking if she's hungry, but Chrysalis finally says no. She doesn't want to feed off of her anymore, if this is what's going to happen to her. Before, Chrysalis probably wouldn't have referred to Cadance and Shining Armor as her parents, likely having come up with nicknames or something else, maybe even just call them by name at first. This would be her moment to finally see Cadance as and refer to her as her mom, and it could bring them closer.

This wouldn't lead to her metamorphosis, mind you, but it would lead Chrysalis to start feeling less and less hungry over time. She wouldn't be too close to Shining Armor, I can imagine there being some tension between them that could stall their dynamic a bit. We can have some fun with Chrysalis's unique body horror-esque abilities here and there as we go, scaring ponies on Nightmare Night, being a little gross every now and again, etc. I can imagine she'd be in a tense part of her life as she grows older where she knows and appreciates what it feels like to be loved, but not know how to, and possibly even be scared of giving love back.

Also, we'd totally have an episode where Chrysalis gets jealous of Flurry Heart getting all of Cadance and Shining Heart's attention after she's born. I can imagine those two having an interesting dynamic, especially with Big Sis Ladybug having to help take care of Flurry. Oof, imagine Twilight having to babysit the both of them during that one episode! XD

Chrysalis getting a metamorphosis is an inevitability in this sort of AU, because if she's being raised to know love and friendship and knowing right from wrong, it's a given she'd eventually change, unless we're still going for that tragic subversion, but then where's the fun in that?

Right, considering the current state of corporate politics on this site, and that it seems that only those affected seem to be actively speaking on the matter, it is up to I, the only fucking cishet on tumblr, to drag this out to a wider audience.

dear non-spanish speakers writing spiderverse fanfiction (or anything with spanglish),

in spanglish you don’t switch by word, you switch by phrase.

it’s not:

“[first part of the sentence in english], [second part of the sentence in english], mi amor.”

“[full english sentence], querida.”

it’s:

“[first part of the sentence in english], [segunda parte de la frase en español], mi amor.”

-

also miles is boricua, miguel is mexican. they have two different accents and use different vocabulary for certain words.

also miles is “nyourican” - a puerto rican native to new york - while his mom is directly from the island, so there are differences there, too, because his spanish is more influence by new york english.

here’s some good references that aren’t google translate (which usually pulls from spain, a country that speaks vastly differently from latin america)

here have some random videos on different slang/spanish accents:

-

in spanish most words are gendered, so most feminine words end in a and masculine/gender neutral words end in o. adding ito/ita makes something cuter, smaller and more affectionate.

spanish nicknames that aren’t “mi amor

  • “querido/a” - darling
  • “cariño” - dear (always masculine regardless, of who its being said to)
  • “mi princesa/príncipe” - my prince/princess
  • “mi rey/reina” - my king/queen
  • “papí/mamí” - can be used in any way; romantic, sexual, familial for one’s parent or child, or just platonically
  • “tesoro” - treasure

also spanish is a language that uses adjectives as terms of affection both cute ones and ones that might sound insensitive in english

  • gordo (fat), flaco (skinny), negro (black), blanco (white), linda (pretty), bella (beautiful), morena (brown skin), etc.

and like most languages that are not english, spanish has multiple ways of saying i love you.

  • te amo” - romantic
  • te quiero” - familial, platonic (although there’s nothing wrong with using it romantically)

see also:

  • te adoro - i adore you
  • te deseo - i want you
  • te necesito - i need you

and, of course, they can vary regionally too.

please use this because i have read a lot of really well written things that take me out of it because the use of spanglish is terrible. don’t just go on your presumptions that spanish/spanglish works in the same way that english does.

buena suerte, gringos.

Writing fight scenes
@bluebxlle_writer on Instagram

1. Pacing

A fight scene should be fast-paced and intense. Unless it's a final battle with numerous parties, a fight scene that's too long tends to take away suspense. To speed up your pacing, use active voice to describe movement and don't overdescribe your characters' thoughts. Excessive inner monologue will be unrealistic, as people usually have no room to think during intense combats.

2. Character mannerisms

Here's a point that people often overlook, but is actually super important. Through fight scenes, you should be able to reveal your characters' contrasting mannerisms and personality. A cunning character would play dirty - fighting less and making use of their opponent's weakness more. A violent character would aim to kill. A softer one would only target to disarm their enemies, using weakened attacks. A short-minded character would only rely on force and attack without thinking. This will help readers understand your characters more and decide who to root for.

3. Making use of surroundings

Not only the characters, you also need to consider the setting of your fight scene and use it to your advantage. Is it suitable for fighting, or are there dangerous slopes that make it risky? Are there scattered items that can help your characters fight (e.g. nails, shards of glass, ropes, wooden boards, or cutlery)? Is it a public place where people can easily spot the fight and call the authorities, or is it a private spot where they can fight to the death?

4. Description

The main things that you need to describe in a fight scene are :

• Characters involved in the fight
• How they initiate and dodge attacks
• Fighting styles and any weapons used
• The injuries caused

Be careful to not drag out the description for too long, because it slows down the pace.

5. Raise the stakes

By raising the stakes of the fight, your readers will be more invested in it. Just when they think it's over, introduce another worse conflict that will keep the scene going. Think of your characters' goals and motivations as well. Maybe if the MC didn't win, the world would end! Or maybe, one person in the fight is going all-out, while the other is going easy because they used to be close :"D

6. Injuries

Fights are bound to be dirty and resulting in injuries, so don't let your character walk away unscathed - show the effect of their injuries. For example, someone who had been punched in the jaw has a good chance of passing out, and someone who had been stabbed won't just remove the knife and walk away without any problem. To portray realistic injuries, research well.

7. Drive the plot forward

You don't write fight scenes only to make your characters look cool - every fight needs to have a purpose and drive the plot forward. Maybe they have to fight to improve their fighting skills or escape from somewhere alive. Maybe they need to defeat the enemy in order to obtain an object or retrieve someone who had been kidnapped. The point is, every single fight scene should bring the characters one step closer (or further :D) to the climax.

8. Words to use

• Hand to hand combat :

Crush, smash, lunge, beat, punch, leap, slap, scratch, batter, pummel, whack, slam, dodge, clobber, box, shove, bruise, knock, flick, push, choke, charge, impact

• With weapon :

Swing, slice, brandish, stab, shoot, whip, parry, cut, bump, poke, drive, shock, strap, pelt, plunge, impale, lash, bleed, sting, penetrate

As someone who struggles to write fight scenes, this is absolutely amazing!!

Okay but if I’m gonna reblog this I need to tell you guys the story of this legendary pachirisu So in the competitive Pokemon scene, there’s what’s called a ‘metagame’, which is what’s generally used and what is/isn’t allowed in competitive battling. Certain pokemon are banned from the ‘meta’ because of being too powerful. Others aren’t generally used because there are better alternatives, or they’re simply too weak. People base their entire strategies around the expectation that they’ll be facing certain pokemon, and attempt to counter them with certain pokemon. But the problem with this meta is, during the 2014 World Championships, there were a small number of pokemon choices that everybody had. Gardevoir, Kangeskhan, Salamence, Tyranitar, Talonflame, Garchomp… the same pokemon coming up again and again. Things weren’t really all that interesting. And then came the Double Battle World Championship. And this guy.

Park Se Jun. One of the best players in the world. He used a Pachirisu with Nuzzle (a move with 100% paralysis chance), Super Fang (cuts target’s HP in half) and Follow Me (a move that redirects attacks AWAY from allied pokemon), and equipped with a recently-buffed Sitrus Berry. And he turned the metagame on its head, because nobody in the championships had prepared for anything outside their incredibly restrictive expectations. Their strategies and planning were completely tripped up by an electric squirrel. Battling his Pachirisu in incredibly tight synergy with the rest of his team, Park Se Jun swept the finals and became World Champion of 2014 Doubles.

And that is the story of the #BASED GOD PACHIRISU.

To give more details on Pachirisu and this Pachirisu in particular:

  • Pachirisu’s stats aren’t great. They aren’t terrible, but they aren’t great. Of the four Pokemon involved in this particular exchange, Salamence and Garchomp have a base stat total of 600, Mega Tyranitar has 700, and Pachirisu has 405. Yeah.
  • To make things worse, Pachirisu is a gimmick Pokemon of a class known as a “Pikachu clone”. Its entire purpose is to be a generic Electric-type with middling stats and chubby cheeks. It was never built for high-level play, and a lot of people will even say that it’s not worth it for casual because there are so many better Electric-types.
  • Pachirisu does have a couple of things going for it, though. Firstly, its Special Defence and Speed stats aren’t totally garbage, and its Defence isn’t bad either. This means that it can take a hit if you train it right (which Se Jun did).
  • Secondly, the moveset that this particular Pachirisu had was a brilliant one for what Se Jun wanted it to do. Nuzzle deals a tiny amount of damage but is guaranteed to paralyse anything that isn’t an Electric- or Ground-type. Paralysis halves speed and gives you a 50/50 chance of not being able to do anything that turn. That’s HUGE. This is a game in which most major attackers are fast as hell, and outspeeding is vital to pretty much all strategies.
  • Super Fang, as mentioned, is guaranteed to do 50% damage to anything that’s not a Ghost-type. Pachirisu cannot explicitly KO with this, but what it can do is break down its opponents’ defences. You can’t use inventory items in competitive play, so it’s unlikely that this damage will be healed, and 50% damage can make the difference between Pachirisu’s partner taking two moves to defeat its opponent vs taking one move.
  • Follow Me redirects opponents’ moves onto Pachirisu if they would have otherwise hit Pachirisu’s partner. This lead to the instance above, in which Pachirisu survived a hit from a Draco Meteor (a 130 power attack in a game where 90 power is considered excellent and 100 power or above generally requires major drawbacks). You might think “but if it couldn’t take out Pachirisu, then it couldn’t take out the Salamence it was meant for, right?” NOPE: Salamence is weak to Dragon-type attacks like Draco Meteor and so would have taken double damage. That’s probably a KO.
  • But the real purpose of Follow Me was for Pachirisu’s intended partner: Gyarados. Depending on the situation, Gyarados takes either double or quadruple damage from Electric-type attacks, which is a shame because Gyarados is otherwise terrifying. Pachirisu has the passive ability Volt Absorb, which means that it’s healed by Electric-type attacks rather than taking damage from them. So if you try to use an Electric-type attack on that Gyarados there’s a very good chance that you will end up healing Pachirisu instead. Not what you want, especially when this particular Pachirisu is so unbelievably bulky.
  • Oh, and its last move is Protect, which totally nullifies damage on Pachirisu for that turn. Useful if Pachirisu can’t do anything useful this turn but you don’t want to swap it out.
  • And that Sitrus Berry? Yeah, that thing recovers 25% of Pachirisu’s total HP the moment it goes below 30% total. So if you just barely fail to kill Pachirisu, it’s going to heal itself. Have fun.
  • The last thing Pachirisu has going for it, at least in this case, is intimidation. The universal response to this team was “Who the fuck brings a fucking Pachirisu to the World Championship?!” But then you realise that Se Jun is totally serious about this ridiculous plan. And then you realise that it’s working. And then you realise: oh shit, this guy is really good. He knows what he’s doing with this.

TL;DR: By all accounts Pachirisu should have been an utterly stupid thing to bring to this level of play, but in practise it was a very clever set-up that took advantage of its decent defensive stats and useful support/survival movepool.

Something of note: Park Se Jun has said himself that bringing Craydily instead would have been the better choice, he just REALLY wanted to use Pachirisu.

Legend.

A friendly reblog to encourage people of all levels of play to use your favorites. It's always possible to find an angle to win, even if they're not the most competitively viable.
