i decided to start watching re:zero and i'll be honest, 17 episodes in i am not terribly impressed with the writing jaklsdjf like i just don't think it handles its deconstruction well. it spends so much time playing the power fantasy straight, and subaru's personality shift doesn't feel earned. it's also really frustrating seeing a guy who is supposed to be a huge fantasy otaku be so confused by some pretty basic fantasy concepts like time loops and beasts that erase you from the timeline and stuff, the writing of him feels really arbitrary a lot of the time

What do you Mean playing the Power fantasy straigth?

It hás been ANYTHING BUT a Power fantasy,

In fact,part of Subaru's character growth is letting Go of his missconceptions that this is Just some generic isekai or something like that and IS a genuine world with actual people in It instead of Mere Tropes and "lumps of EXP"

Said character growth that Begin to happen the Very First Episode and by the end of the season is finalized and realized

His personality shift is Very earned and valid,Its kind of a big thing for his character Arc and If you dint notice why i genuinaly think glutonny migth have took your Memories

Subaru inst confused by Said concepts,Its Just that to him they arent fantasy anymore and REALITY instead and now he has to deal with the actual implications of things like that,Subaru Doenst get to Just looks at something like the withe whale and think "oh,what a interesting Way of retcon a character out of the story" he instead thinks "Holy fuck,that person Doenst exist anymore and no one remembers",even worse when Its someone he knows like rem or Julius or the merchants or the army or etç

Subaru now has to live with this,and If he Doenst want he migth as well die,which Still fucking Hurts... And of course...

what a funny post for me to make an episode before the show fully demonstrates its poor understanding of deconstruction and subversion by having the main character hit his lowest point so that he can be brought back from the brink by the love of a girl who exists only to love and serve him unconditionally. wearing the costume of a deconstruction while continuing to use all the fundamental building blocks of the peers it pretends to critique because at the end of the day re:zero's writing still can't get a handle on the idea that women are people

Reminder that NOT a whole Lot of fans know this but the entirety of season one is bassically the tutorial here,thhe real stuff start at season 2

1) i am not talking about the way subaru views the women around him, i am talking about the way the show clearly writes women as vessels for men's development. does the show from s2 on actually start writing women as fully realized people without consideration for their relationship to subaru, or does subaru as a character just start treating them better?

2) if it DOES improve why should people sit through a whole season of misogynistic badly written harem fantasy shit just to get to the part where the show meets the lowest standards of "the writing views women as people rather than self-actualization dispensing machines" when they could watch anything else

I think youre missunderstanding,NOT everything portrayed is meant to be taken as correct,in fact,ré:zero seems Very progressive for me,SPECIALLY since the oni sisters obssesion with the person they love (Subaru for rem and roswall for ram) are portrayed as a BAD thing,Also,next season there is a whole thing about How Subaru trying to save Emília Doenst ACTUALLY end UP well for her because she hás to confront the problem herself,a whole "saying the damsel in distress Prevent the damsel from growing" thing

Besides,youre forgetting other characters like crush or Anastasia or even goddam priscilla

ALL of which are the type of woman who WOUNT Just Fall Head over heels over a Man for whatever reason

Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes don’t go feral like in the book.  It’s almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.

Thinking about how Aloy has earned her place among several tribes. Not as a "savior" or "champion" but an actual, average, everyday tribe member who completed the necessary trials to be a full fledged member.

The Oseram, Utaru, and Quen are the only who don't have a "proving ceremony" or "coming of age trial" that we know of. But she does participate in two of those tribes' main way of life:

Aloy could technically try to claim citizenship in every tribe except the Utaru. She went from an Outcast Girl to a Woman with multiple places to call home should she ever decide to retire.
