It's the week i know a lot of you have been waiting for! The Austere Academy! Enter the Quagmires! And also Carmelita, Vice Principal Nero, Mr Remora, and Mrs Bass. A shockingly accurate commentary on the state of schooling as well; I did once have a teacher who spent a solid month just making us measuring things using the metric system. I was just sitting there like "good Lord, Mrs Bass transed genders and changed last names."
Anyway. The usual: thoughts, opinions, comments, theories, memories, etc.
As a kid, book 5 wasn’t one of my favorites, but I don’t recall exactly why. In hindsight, it’s a turning point in the series, widening the scope.
The Austere Academy continues the theme of The Miserable Mill by presenting a broken institution warped by egotistical individuals. Nero is such an over-the-top, deliberately cruel character who torments children just for fun. I guess I used to be enraged that he got away with it. It has just occured to me that he probably picks on those children who are unprotected by a rich and powerful guardian (i.e. orphans), which is why he still maintains his position. Which means that Carmelita learns by his example.
Setting up Nero’s ridiculous vanity pays of when Olaf manages to wrap him around his finger by catering to his massive ego. He just needs to praise Nero’s violin skills for Nero to trust him completely. This continoues the theme of Olaf gaining the Baudelaire’s guardians’ trust by exploiting their weaknesses, which can be read as a cautionary tale.
It was nice to let the Baudelaires encounter some friends, for once. The Quagmires clearly mirror the Baudelaires with their backstory but also in the way they underestimate Count Olaf, similar to Klaus in book 1. They pay are terrible price for their kindness and loyalty. Their appearence also further expands the Snicketverse: Now the Baudelaires have real allies who are cleary involved in a greater mystery. And of course, they bring up V.F.D. for the first time.
I do wonder what terrible thing they found out right before they were kidnapped. We know from TUA that a scandal concerning V.F.D. used to be in the newspapers. What it the Quagmires knew all along that the Baudelaire parents had murdered Olaf’s parents?
Also a fun fact: I first consumed TAA as the German audiobook version, which features a sound bit of what Nero’s violin play might sound like. My grandma once said it sounded like a derailing street car.

But yeah, basically I recently watched The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess, and it was so fun!
The protagonist's younger self was relatable to my own younger self in a way that was so fitting it made me cringe lol (minus being into romance; I hadn't realized I was a lesbian yet, but I did know that I didn't want to read or write about supposedly "hot" guys).
Unfortunately, I doubt this anime will get a second season, but I guess I'll just have to read the manga, right?
I’ve been having trouble with the flagging-as-mature-for-no-reason thing too as of late, they flagged one of my KIngdom Hearts memes and it wasn’t even one of the ones that mention sex D:

I memed that scene in Max Heart episode 21 where Hikari and Hikaru (the boy in the mansion) meet for the first time…
Honestly, I really liked Hikaru and his dynamic with Hikari, it was a really cool concept. I wish I saw more of Hikaru in fanfics, but I feel like fic writers tend to forget he exists :(
I think I’ve mentioned this here before, but sometimes I imagine a sequel fic taking place several years post-canon, where Hikaru is like 12 or 13 and becomes the Shiny Luminous figure to two darkness-using Pretty Cure, since the lore for the series emphasizes balance.
Maybe they’d be fighting against a Garden of Light extremist group who want to destroy all darkness, which would end up destroying the balance and sending the world into chaos, but at the same time, Hikaru is really adverse to using the power of destruction, given his traumatic experience in Max Heart (and how it can eat away at the user from the inside), and the mascots are Dusk Zone creatures and miiiiight not have all worlds’ best interests at heart.
And maybe the Zakenna butlers could be there too for comic relief idk XD
My ideas for the dark Cures are a duo called Cure Tide and Cure Tempest. Tide is a shy white-haired girl with a surprisingly morbid personality, and she has a deep sea/creepy sea creature/moon theme; Cure Tempest is a blind delinquent brunette whose cold, tough exterior belies a warmer side she shows to her friends, and she has a wind/storm/bat theme. Dunno what Hikaru’s alter ego would be called, but it’s gotta be something along the lines of Shiny Luminous’s name.
And maybe one of the fairies is secretly a back-from-the-darkness Poisonny? idk, I don’t think I’d ever have time to get around to actually writing this, I’ve got my hands full with so many other things. Maybe I could do some picrews of the concepts tho

love how in the second Max Heart ED, we get a family Christmas picture of Hikaru and his four evil parents, plus the Zakenna guys dressed as reindeer, it’s so cute :D
of course, four of the people in the picture will be dead come season’s end, but shhh
(I wonder if Hikaru ever misses them…)
I also wonder what happened to the Zakenna butlers after Max Heart ended. I like to think they’re still out there somewhere, getting into zany shenanigans and being completely ineffectual
