tumblr users love reading. you literally stopped for this post just because it has words in it
this is one of my favorite bits about tumblr
the users seem to actually prefer text posts to anything else, and treat it as a chore to play a video especially with sound

the other day i saw a tiktok of a woman talking about how her hyper-militant abusive parents would sometimes punish her by “taking away her name” and referring to her as a prisoner number. genuinely terrible stuff, obviously. but i skimmed the comments and. listen. i truly DO NOT mean to dunk too hard on this person, like they could be a kid or something, but.
just. breathtaking. imagine if your primary reference for the concept of the un-personing of prisoners was (check notes) a book series about owls.
This is why it’s important to Include stuff like this in fiction, especially ya fiction. It can be a lot of sheltered and/or indoctrinated children, in the case of a lot of rural “Christians”, first introduction to these types of concepts in a way they can understand.
I don’t think there’s anything weird or shameful about it. Knowledge is knowledge, regardless of where it came from.

Today I learned 3D animation is a horror show outside the camera’s field of view.
Just to add context, the director wanted the scene to use an 85mm lens which is slightly telephoto. Telephoto lenses give a very intimate feel because they compress the scene. Background and foreground objects can appear larger at longer focal lengths.
But that compression can also make objects look the wrong size in context with the subject depending on the framing.
This is done in live action as well using another person’s hands in front of the camera.
Or sometimes they create giant fake hands like in Hellboy.
they did this in lord of the rings too!

“In the main menu of Mario Power Tennis, Toad is present to explain the selection options. It appears as though Toad is close to the background and roughly the same size as the icons. However, moving the viewpoint reveals that Toad is actually extremely tiny and extremely close to the camera (note Toad near the left edge of the screen in the bottom image).”

23 years old and I just made the connection that people on the northern hemisphere have a different view of the moon than people on the southern hemisphere.
I was a whole like, 40ish years old when I went to the equatorial region for the first time. My North American ass went to Colombia and first off, could not fuckin handle the fact that while it felt like summer (80-90F, humid), the sun went down on the dot of 6pm every night and rose at 6am every morning. There I was at 7pm fully beliving it was midnight, because it was both dark and hot. Like, I’m used to early dark! but it’s cold when it’s dark early! I could NOT handle it.
And then, there in the dark, pitch-midnight-summer-black at 7pm, up pops this lovely crescent moon and it is
fucking SIDEWAYS
i had NEVER EVER EVER realized, despite knowing my whole life that the moon is a spherical object rotating around Earth, also a spherical object, that it would be at different angles from different spots on Earth.
It’s the MOON! How can it be DIFFERENT! My poor patient partner drew me a diagram and I was like listen I know all of that but I cannot actually handle it. Nobody warned me the moon looks different.
So yeah my feeble mind was BLOWN, all y'all world travelers/residents can laugh at me now. Knowing it is one thing, experiencing it is something else, and I did NOT see it coming.
I remember being in the pagan scene in my twenties and being faintly annoyed by the omnipresent triple moon symbol: )O(
… because I’m from the southern hemisphere and it Doesn’t Look Like That here. And (O) does not look anywhere near as cool.

it actually is insane to me that it’s a cultural norm for men to suck ass at getting their wives/gfs gifts. especially when they whine about how they have no idea what women like.
man, you’re not getting a gift for Female Domestic Partner. you’re getting a gift for Natalie, a person whom you have been married to for 7 years, whom has lived in the same home with you for a decade, whom speaks to you every day about her thoughts and interests, whom you presumably love, and whom you can directly or indirectly ask what she wants. it’s not that you don’t know what half the human population wants, that’s irrelevant. you don’t know what Natalie wants and that is inexcusable.
imagine if i did my work. if i sat down and Did it. and it was Done. can you even imagine such a thing
what’s that one thing where they asked how ripely from alien was so realistic and believable as a female character in scifi for once and they were like “well we just took the dude from the original script and made him a girl and changed nothing else. it works bc men and women are the same?” and people were like “woah no way” and then didn’t learn anything from that for 20 years
“how do you write such believable men as a woman?” “how do you write such believable women a man?” and the answer people who are good at it always give is “i just write people. were literally the exactly the same. do you think the opposite sex is some sorta totally different animal???” and people respond “woah that’s wild. yea i do. and im not gonna stop thinking that goodbye :)”

The really unfortunate thing about mental health progress is that sometimes you realize you’ve made it in the form of “wow, I haven’t felt this bad in a fucking while”
