The Amazing Digital Good Place: Hanging onto Humanity and Finding Meaning in a Stagnant Life

So as some of you already know, I am a HUGE fan of both TADC and The Good Place. These shows share common threads: a group of humans stuck in a metaphysical space where they have little to no control over what happens to them, but trying to make the best of it anyway through the connections they form with each other and processing their issues.

And since the 7th episode of the former dropped last week, I can't help but be reminded of season 3 of the latter, particularly around the Jeremy Bearimy mark. In fact, I think what is discussed in this episode of TGP onwards shares some parallels with TADC and the heart of what the series is trying to convey.

In short, to quote the GOAT herself:

Let's talk about it.

(Spoilers for TADC and TGP below!)

Okay. Hot take. I don’t think Jax ran over a child. I don’t think that’s what that was about at all. Jax is characterized by escapism and deflection, refusing to admit his problems and avoiding other people’s attempts to help him. His character has never been about guilt. To add this superfluous and frankly thematically unrelated element would undermine him as a character. I personally think he ran away from home/got kicked out or something along those lines. Running away makes sense to his character and additionally his reactions to leaving the circus have always been centered around evidently not having people waiting for him on the other side. Everything in animation is intentional and with how TADC is written, it’s very clear that everything said is intentional. He has nothing in the outside world.

"Jax intentionally doomed the cast!" "Jax was being mind controlled by Caine!" — Both of you are wrong. Here's what I think.

No editing no peer review we die like Gummigoo

Episode 7 was certainly one of the most wild episodes we've seen so far. Lots of twists, lots of ups and downs and a huge lore drop that was thrown right out of the window in the last 5 minutes of the episode.

One of the things that's been capturing the fandom's attention is Jax's "betrayal" that happens when he pushes the red button that presumably would doom the cast to stay in the circus forever.

Honestly, that scene was extremely well done, simply because of how ambiguous everything seems to be, and how it left many people confused on who to be mad at. Jax, or Caine?

The truth is, there's more nuance to this sequence of events than meets the eye. More than some of the fandom is willing to give the show credit for.

Screencaps from when Jax and 'Ribbit's' hands touched. I'm sure there's some sort of meaning behind this lol
