i have to replace my phone soon and they won't sell me anything with an audio jack, but like i have all these perfectly good headphones around i want to be able to still use--all else aside, being Unable to Use Headphone if bluetooth doesn't feel like working today is a stupid problem to have. and i refuse to live that way.

so i go on Amazon to find out how much a USB-C-to-aux dongle costs.

turns out it runs you between 3 and 12 dollars generally. but also i found this:

'allows you to listen to your music and charge your phone at the same time!' amazing! a solution to a problem that did not exist a subjective five minutes ago!

and which could go back to not existing if you would just return the stupid sound jack.

... although actually i've had devices that had separate *ports* for charging and audio which you could not use at the same time bc the charging cord would obstruct the audio port but yeah don't obsess about slimming the phone just get me a working audio port

For my fellow ice sport enthusiasts:

Different sports use different kinds of ice!

(not me. sharing bc i found it interesting & figured my fellow hockey nerds would too)

kiralamouse

so are the “different kinds of ice” different frozen liquids*, or different temperatures of frozen water, or both???

*I mean I’m sure it’s all basically water, but is it all water of equal purity or do they use additives to get a slightly different quality

@ people who carry bags everywhere what do you put in them what is there to bring other than chapstick, keys, phone and maybe a tampon why are you packing a suitcase to be outside for 5 hours

so i'm in between on this as in i rarely carry big bags anymore and i never packed a suitcase to bring everywhere but when i carried bigger bags regularly it was so i could carry a journal/sketchbook and a jacket along with the above basics and the ever-present emergency book to read i think if i didn't have ebooks now i'd still psychologically need to carry those physical books everywhere nowadays i bless winter bc my winter coat can actually hold my entire wallet in a pocket and my jeans pockets can handle everything else i want to carry so i can go bagless but when i tell you that i used to have a *tiny* backpack purse that could've held maybe three good-size mass market paperbacks and made it work with a journal and pencil and one mmpb and my wallet and an umbrella and headphones and my cell phone and keys i was v pleased i hate carrying anything but if i must i wish to make the most of it

Given that striving for justice is one of the main tenets of Sikhism, and that they are supposed to carry the means to physically defend the defenseless at all times, it sounds to me like this kid was acting as the kind of warrior for justice his father would be proud of.

i appreciate the cleverness of the nonviolent violence bobas: irritating enough to be a genuine deterrent harmless enough to cause no accusation of intended injury ... at least in a sane world justice solidarity sikhism

real quick if anyone is confused: professional athletes are paid a lot of money because they generate a lot of money. if you believe that professional athletes should not be paid a proportional share of the revenue they generate, you are anti worker's rights and also fundamentally do not understand how labor works

somejoyinmudville

like hey. im a communist. i am not arguing for rich people. i am arguing for workers to get paid what they are worth for the labor they perform. athletes being paid a lot of money is not a hill you have to die on. it is not a consideration you should be incorporating into your political and economic policy. athletes are not special, they are workers, and if you say "this worker does not deserve to be paid what they are owed" you are anti labor and you should not be trusted under any circumstances.

somejoyinmudville

also like. arguing that white male athletes should not be adequately compensated for their labor is really not the leftist win you think it is when wnba players get 9% of the leagues revenue and pwhl players are forced to work second jobs. if you think the recognizable names of major men's sports shouldn't be compensated, what do you think about workers rights for bench players and 4th liners in women's sports who are paid astronomically less?

i have grudgingly come to accept athlete pay between the fact that they are certainly entitled to a fair share of the revenue and the fact that pro athletes have to plan on getting an entire career's worth of income out of a few years because the odds are too good that they come out of this career disabled in ways that make many jobs incredibly difficult i get it and i think they're entitled to fair compensation but i still deeply resent the money in sports and other entertainment it could be that the industry ONLY distributes its revenues unfairly but it really feels like entertainment GETS more revenues than they add value to society regardless of the entire industry there are definitely people who get waaaayyyy too much money out of it 'oh shouldn't a movie star be compensated 20 million for a 400 million dollar film?' idk does that star contribute *THAT MUCH MORE* than all the people who work to make the star look good? sports team owner shouldn't be a billionaire for managing a team playing games etc etc

in the whole greenland conversation i feel like there's not nearly enough acknowledgement of the fact that greenland is already suffering under imperial rule. seeing wayyyyy too much tacit validation of denmark's possession of greenland on socials today. look into reproductive abuse against greenland inuit women by the danish state. US acquisition of greenland would be bad but the status quo is not good. this is not a matter of sovereignty, i only wish it were a matter of sovereignty, it's just a bunch of imperial powers playing RISK with indigenous people's lives again

kiralamouse

Quit saying “Greenland already belongs to Denmark”. Just say “Greenland doesn’t belong to the US, and doesn’t want to.”

that said these days I’m very wary about loudly voicing my belief that Greenland should be independent, because I’m tired of my country taking territory to “liberate” it and I get the vibe that Greenlanders would prefer not to change the status quo unless/until actual independence looks like the likely result

greenland congress needs to restrain the executive already they're so far off okay us international crimes rn i neither support nor condemn denmark's claims bc rn greenland isn't worrying about that greenland seems to be just fine working with denmark to keep the us out
